Welcome to our website, "The Science Of Light" where you'll learn about some fascinating properties of light and the many applications they enable.
You may be familiar (or maybe not) with electrical signals being used to transmit voice over phone lines or with radio waves sending voice across space. It's almost certain that part of the signal path by which you read this page has been sent as light through optical fibres!
These fibres can carry vast amounts of information at fantastic speeds which has made the internet possible. At the Tyndall in Cork we are doing our part in studying light to develop new applications.
Browse through this site by clicking on any text which is bold, like this, or use the "mind maps" at the bottom of each page!
The site describes many of the special features of light and energy. You can navigate through the site using the highlighted words, the mind maps at the bottom of the page or using the links on the left hand bar.
