INSPIRE @ Tyndall
Tyndall is a member of the Integrated NanoScience
Platform for
INSPIRE has been funded to the level of €31.6M by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) via PRTLI4 and was officially launched on October 31st, 2008 by the Minister of State for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Jimmy Devins.
INSPIRE aims are
1. Creation of a shared national infrastructural capability serviced effectively by trained support staff to enhance the national capacity for delivering innovative research in nanoscience and nanoscale technologies.
2. Development of shared national nanoscience graduate programmes with international appeal resulting in graduate numbers aligned with stated SSTI goals.
3. Expansion of existing institutional linkages to facilitate new collaborations, locally, regionally and nationally across institutions and disciplines.
INSPIRE Research Domains
The research within the INSPIRE collaboration is organised
into three key research strands
- Nanoelectronics
- Nanophotonics
- Bionanoscience
In each domain there already exists among the partners research excellence, collaboration across institutions, international research leadership and value-added relationships with industry.
Tyndall’s aims for
INSPIRE:
- The development of new world-class facilities and capabilities in the exploitation of nanoscale materials and structures in working beyond-CMOS devices and circuits, and new devices for next-generation photonic systems. This will be conducted in collaboration with important members of the Irish ICT industry at all size levels (Intel, Analog, Seagate, Lucent, Bell Labs, Eblana, SensL, Firecomms BT Ireland etc)
- The development of new post-graduate training programmes designed to produce high quality graduates at PhD level. Tyndall intends to double the number of PhD students it produces in the next 5 years.
- The transfer of new knowledge into exploitation, through both licensing and the generation of new spinout companies.
- The promotion of a National collaboration in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
The all-island nature of the consortium is an aspect which is particularly
welcome.
