Background

Purpose of the Water Framework Directive

The purpose of this Directive is to establish a framework for the protection of inland surface waters, transitional waters, coastal waters and groundwater
Overall, the Directive aims at achieving good water status for all waters by 2015.
The Water Framework Directive covers all waters including inland waters (surface water and groundwater) and transitional and coastal waters
Tight Timeline – 2006 Comprehensive monitoring program in place
Measuring PH, Dissolved Oxygen, Temperature, Conductivity, Nutrients

Objectives of the Water Framework Directive

to protect and enhance the status of aquatic ecosystems
to promote sustainable water use based on long-term protection of available water resources
to provide for sufficient supply of good quality surface water and groundwater
to provide for enhanced protection and improvement of the aquatic environment
to contribute to mitigating the effects of floods and droughts
to protect territorial and marine waters
to establish a register of 'protected areas'
