Tyndall National Institute is a leading European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) hardware and systems. We focus on addressing societal challenges through Deep Tech innovation in both micro/nano electronics and photonics – materials, devices, circuits and systems. Central to our national role is delivering economic impact through research excellence. We work with collaborators in industry and academia to transform research into commercialisable technology platforms in our core market areas of electronics, communications, energy, health, agri-food, the environment and advanced manufacturing.

More than 600 researchers and professional support staff, including 130 graduate students, are based at Tyndall. We generate over €35m in income each year with approximately 85% coming from competitively-won contracts. With a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide, we focus on delivering real impact from our excellent research.

Tyndall is a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural institution with over 50 nationalities, representing a wide range of disciplines from science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to technology commercialisation, project-, financial- and facilities-management, HR and marketing/communications.

Micro & Nano Systems (MNS) Centre. We work on advanced research into technologies and platforms for miniaturised, smart, autonomous, wireless sensor devices and systems that will enable the future sensor economy.  We currently have more than 140 staff and 80 graduate students. This includes a cohort of over 50 Principal Investigators within 12 Research groups which undertake deep-tech research across domains which span the “atoms to systems” landscape.

Nanotechnology Group. Our group focuses on design, fabrication and synthesis of functional nanostructured materials and electrodes with applications including energy storage and sensing. Our researchers have core expertise in wet-chemical synthesis of nanostructures; wafer-scale, CMOS-compatible fabrication of nanoelectrodes and hybrid integration of nanostructured materials into devices fabricated using conventional "top-down" processes. As part of our participation in the CONFIRM, CONNECT and VISTAMILK SFI research centres, we are developing novel sensing and energy storage platforms based on the use of nanostructured materials and composites (including plasmonic and graphitic carbon materials). Applications include sensing or energy storage devices for Internet of Things (IoT) edge nodes, smart manufacturing and agri-food.

We are seeking a creative, self-motivated researcher to lead and grow the “Functional Nanostructured Materials” team. This team is focused on development of nanostructured materials, composites and fabrication routes for novel sensing and energy storage platforms. A key emerging theme is development of novel material fabrication routes based on sustainable materials for fabrication of flexible sensing devices.

This is a key position, of central importance to sustaining and growing the Nanotechnology group. You will inspire group members to work efficiently in a friendly, collaborative environment. You will also be directly responsible for initiating, winning and managing national and international research projects to sustain and grow your team.

Key Responsibilities

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Manage the scientific progression of the team and support the Group progression in line with the MNS strategy and the Tyndall Strategic plan.
  • Support the identification and development of independent research programmes.
  • Lead the management of research capabilities, laboratories and associated infrastructure in order to successfully execute research objectives,
  • Support the establishment, management and development of the research team (staff, post-docs and students) and provide mentorship, coaching and supervision as appropriate
  • Contribute to the engagement on intellectual property activities in partnership with the Office of Technology Transfer
  • Contribute to the development of national and international collaborative research networks and create new synergies/collaborations between Tyndall and other research third party bodies
  • Leverage existing projects and research facilities at Tyndall in order to identify new research opportunities and industrial projects
  • Independently identify research objectives and potential funding sources and prepare and write bids for funding proposals
  • Establish and maintain key industrial partnerships, including management and delivery of commercially-focused projects
  • Disseminate the outcomes of the research, including peer‐reviewed academic publications and presentations at conferences of international standing
  • Supervise postdocs, post graduate research students as supervisor and/or co‐supervisor, as appropriate
  • Participate in post graduate examination as internal and external examiner
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Be able to participate in undergraduate teaching as required
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post

Essential Criteria

  • A Ph.D. in one of the following disciplines: chemistry, physical chemistry, materials science or a related field
  • Typically at least 8 years relevant post-doctoral experience
  • A track record of high quality peer-reviewed publications
  • A proven track record of securing research funding and the coordination of successful European and National collaborative research projects
  • An academic record of scientific excellence and independent research.
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Strong experimental skills in nanomaterials and nanoscale fabrication together with demonstration of functionalities, including sensing and energy storage
  • Experience in the formation and management of research teams.
  • A track record of research-led teaching and examining at postgraduate level as the primary academic supervisor

Desirable Criteria

  • Relevant experience for the fields of nanoscale synthesis, design and fabrication of materials with enhanced opto-electronic properties, design and fabrication of sensing materials.
  • Strong background in establishing new research programmes including:
  • Development and implementation of multi-disciplinary research programmes
  • Identification and procurement of research infrastructure
  • Management and design of research laboratories
  • Awareness of material- and process-optimisation methodologies based on statistical methods, machine-learning or artificial intelligence
  • Knowledge transfer and commercialisation experience

Appointment will be made on the Grade 6A Admin salary scale €59,828 - €75,527 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
