BOF-76 Senior Researcher – Team Leader Industry 4.0  (Wireless Sensor Networks Group)

Contract: Full Time/ Fixed Term

The Wireless Sensor Network Group (WSN) at the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork is currently advertising for the position of Senior Application Engineer/Staff Researcher to lead a research team focused on Industry 4.0 software and systems.

The Tyndall National Institute, at University College, Cork is a world leader in the development of disruptive smart sensor systems for use in the body, on the body and around the body. Working closely with a global range of academic, business and clinical partners, our world class technology is being developed in conjunction with several multinational corporations and is approaching market readiness in a number of areas, such as wearable systems for health monitoring.

As a result of funding secured under significant commercial and government investment in the area of wearable sensing systems for healthcare applications, the Wireless Sensor Network Group, Tyndall National Institute - University College Cork, invites applications for an appointment as a Senior Application Engineer to drive and manage a multidisciplinary research team and implement research-focused platforms in the area of Wearable sensor systems for Connected Health and Wellness monitoring.

Reporting to the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) Head of Group or their nominee, this is an exciting opportunity to help define and implement advanced research projects in the disruptive, fast-moving, industrially relevant area of Industry4.0 software and systems.  Working with the WSN Head of Group and aligned research teams, the successful candidate will lead and manage a team of multi-disciplinary industry oriented researchers with expertise in the development of Industry 4.0 software and systems, focused on asset tracking, precision localisation, supply chain monitoring and condition based monitoring, to execute and resource defined fundamental and applied research projects to enable factories of the future research projects.

Aligned with the activities of the SFI Centre - CONFIRM for smart manufacturing, the team leader will define and implement a research roadmap Industry4.0 software and systems in the Wireless Sensor Networks group in the Tyndall National Institute. The team comprises engineers, researchers and postgraduate students with various levels of experience and qualifications in a variety of engineering domains.

Activities will include applied research definition, funding, and implementation, in the development of solutions for industry 4.0 activities including asset tracking, precision localisation, supply chain monitoring and condition based monitoring. The role requires travel to international conferences, workshops, industry meetings, proposal project meetings, to strategically position Tyndall WSN as a world-leading advanced research group in Industry 4.0 relevant systems.

The successful candidate will need to show high levels of initiative, self-management, achievement-orientation, and motivation as well as a proven ability to resource and manage a multidisciplinary research team in an exciting and fast moving research area, evidenced by attracting research funding, publishing in leading journals and generation of IP.

Key Responsibilities

  • To develop and lead a program of advanced research in the area of Industry 4.0 software and systems, developing new technologies, Intellectual Property (IP) and high impact publications
  • Establish Tyndall’s position internationally as a world leader in embedded systems design and their integration in factories of the future applications
  • Work with Tyndall’s industry/research partners to identify their wireless sensing needs as regards Industry4.0 software and systems design, development integration and test.
  • The candidate will be required to define, resource, lead and implement disruptive research projects in the system specification, design and deployment of Industry4.0 software and systems.
  • To Ensure the sustainability of the research team through the securing of research funding in competitive proposals to national and international funding agencies
  • To conduct and lead the following research activities, including planning, funding, recruitment, organising, conducting, and communicating research studies within the overall scope of applied research projects.
  • To coordinate and perform a variety of independent and team activities involved in the collection, analysis, documentation and interpretation of information/results.
  • To undertake tasks which will include recording results and preparing reports, including conclusions and recommendations. Application of qualitative and quantitative research techniques to establish wearable health.
  • To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities in order to develop appropriate research and leadership skills and competencies.
  • To carry out administrative and project management work to support the program of research and ensure all project deliverables and milestones are achieved in a timely manner.
  • To engage in management and mentoring of team members research activities and their personal development
  • To disseminate project outputs, through the interpretation of results and the preparation of manuscripts for publication, including where appropriate public engagement and outreach activities.
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • A post-graduate (PHD) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline
  • > 8 years’ experience in embedded systems research and development
  • A proven ability to independently take on projects and carry them out from initial requirements to final preproduction prototype stage
  • A proven ability to secure research funding through competitive research proposals
  • Experience with Industry4.0 and/or Digital Manufacturing software and systems development, integration and test
  • Expertise in hardware/software co-design for embedded systems
  • Experience in Test and characterisation of embedded systems using appropriate lab-equipment
  • Proven project management skills including scheduling, budgeting and delivery of defined milestones and deliverables
  • Proven capability to secure the financial viability of the Industry4.0 software and systems team through successfully funded proposals in a relevant area
  • A demonstrated capability in the delivery of advanced research projects
  • Capability of effectively leading and managing teams to deliver innovative solutions
  • Excellent communication skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Industrial or mechanical design capabilities and a knowledge of Design for Manufacturing practices
  • Experience in embedded systems hardware and software design and development
  • Experience in standards-based wireless and embedded system protocols
  • Experience in the typical tradeoffs involved in developing Industry4.0 software and systems for multiple application domains is an asset.

Appointment may be made on the Grade 6a Admin II Scale (B) €58,799- €74,228.  In all instances the successful appointment will be at the first point of the scale.
