The Wireless Sensor Network Group (WSN) at the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork is currently advertising for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher for Human Machine Interface (HMI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled edge processing technologies for smart manufacturing environments.

The WSN group at the Tyndall National Institute has a specific research focus in the development of Smart systems for the factories of the future with core strengths in Information and Communications Technologies to develop the next generation of breakthrough Human Machine Interface (HMI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled edge processing technologies for Industry 4.0. These systems will incorporate multiple processing capabilities, sensing modalities and communications technologies, (e.g. SoC/FPGA hybrid platforms, Inertial Measurement Units, Time of Flight (ToF)) to solve the research problem of accuracy and precision, low latency and high speed real time tracking for HMI enabling teleoperation of advanced robotics employed in the manufacturing environment.

As a result, the Tyndall National Institute is therefore seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher in the area of edge AI enabled HMI for advanced robotics teleoperation in Smart Manufacturing.   The successful candidate will be part of a team of multi-disciplinary researchers with expertise in microsystems technology, wireless sensors, electronics and low power system design and algorithm development as well as sensor data fusion in embedded systems to facilitate the applied research and deployment of the systems in question in a manufacturing site as a demonstrator project in conjunction with the industry project partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with project managers in conjunction with senior researchers and Tyndall’s industry partners to develop edge AI enabled HMI systems for advanced robotics teleoperation in Smart Manufacturing
  • Work with the Industry partners in the development an industry relevant demonstrator that showcases practical applications of the platform technologies developed during the overall project.
  • Help develop a research strategy for collaborative robotics and embedded Vision/multi sensor systems
  • Engage in the dissemination of the results of research, as directed by a Senior Researcher or Principal Investigator.
  • Planning, organizing of appropriate demonstrators and communicating Tyndall’s research activities as part of the groups outreach programs
  • Carry out administrative work to support the program of research and ensure all project deliverables and milestones are achieved in a timely manner
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and required Health & Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • A PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline.
  • Relevant experience in at least one of the following areas: Embedded Visions Systems, Edge AI Collaborative robots in industry 4.0 applications. 
  • Technical SW competence related to development of Embedded Systems and / or FPGAs
  • A strong publication record.
  • Strong communication skills, including report writing and presentation skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of project managing (academic and industry) R&D projects
  • Experience with the HW development of embedded systems
  • A proven ability to work independently to a tight schedule
  • High levels of initiative, self-management, achievement-orientation, and motivation
  • Capability of working effectively within a team to achieve results and deliver these results on schedule
  • Proven capability to supervise junior members of staff and students

Appointment may be made on the post-doctorate researcher scale €38,630 - €45,942 per annum.  Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
