BOR-02 Research Software Engineer -International Energy Research Centre

Contract: Full Time/Specified Purpose

The International Energy Research Centre (IERC), hosted at Tyndall National Institute (TNI) is recruiting for the role of research software engineer with a focus on software applications as they relate to building energy management and modelling. The role will include contributing to the success of the software development team to work on projects both internally and externally funded Therefore, the optimal candidate will have excellent programming, software development and IT skills.  The Research Software Engineer role will report to the SIERRA Group Lead and will work on multiple national and international research projects.

Successful candidates for this position will be required to take a strong role in the team and assist research assistants and interns with their work. The candidate will be required to deliver projects on-time and within budget and bring issues to the attention of the SIERRA Group lead.  The primary focus of the successful applicant will be a combination of software engineering and research, the applicant will also be required to contribute to the writing and submission of project proposals for new funding and other group activities where asked.

Key Responsibilities

  • To act as a technical point of contact and contribute to the successful delivery of SIERRA Group projects by completing all tasks assigned by the software team lead.
  • To monitor activities of research assistants and interns, ensuring all group projects are accurately recorded using appropriate tools as required.
  • To report directly to the group lead and report any project (or other) issues when they arise.
  • To contribute to growing success of the group and Centre, by carrying out research tasks assigned by the group lead. In addition, independent research is strongly encouraged which must be approved by the group lead.
  • To present updates in group, centre or project meetings as required.
  • To consistently improve personal skills and make suggested improvements to the group lead on overall team skills.
  • Actively pursue opportunities to publish and lead on publications in high quality journals and conferences.
  • Provide guidance as required to any support staff assisting with the research project.
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • A BSc degree in Computer Science, Software Development, or related discipline with typically 4 years’ experience working in a development environment with full software lifecycle experience
  • Strong, demonstrated experience with Object Oriented languages and databases
  • Demonstrated capability of working effectively within a team to achieve results
  • Demonstrated experience in Version Control (e.g. git)
  • Demonstrated experience in at least two of the following: Java, Python, PHP, JS.
  • Evidence of excellent organisational, writing and communication skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience of working in a research centre, ideally in the energy sector
  • Experience with data and statistical analysis skills
  • Experience in any of the following areas would be of benefit: JavaScript frameworks such as AngularJS, MEAN Stack, Bootstrap, RESTful APIs, App Development (iOS / Android), NoSQL, RDBMs, Project Management, Software Testing and Debugging, R, Cloud-based Development.
  • Web Security experience would also be beneficial. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to a tight schedule
  • Evidence of excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Self-starter with strong initiative to develop personally and professionally

Appointment may be made on the Administrative Scale Grade 5b with salary range of €42,404 – €52,256.  Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
