Tyndall National Institute is a leading European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) hardware and systems. Specialising in both electronics and photonics – materials, devices, circuits and systems. Central to our mission is delivering economic impact through research excellence. We work with industry and academia to transform research into products in our core market areas of electronics, communications, energy, health, agri-food and the environment. We generate over €35m in income each year with approximately 85% coming from competitively won contracts.

With a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide, we are focused on delivering real impact from our excellent research.

As the national institute for photonics and micro/nanoelectronics and a research flagship of UCC, the institute employs 600 researchers, engineers and support staff, including 130 full-time graduate students.

The ICT for Energy Efficiency Group (ICT4EE) primarily focuses on developing power management solutions encompassing ultra-low power energy harvesting PMICs (Power Management ICs), system level simulation models and system integration of materials and devices via internal and external collaborations with academic and industry partners particularly in the energy, industry 4.0 and medtech sectors.

Role Description

The job is an effective combination of technical (technologies and applications), program management (across multiple projects and disciplines) and industry engagement expertise requiring specialist technical skills and applications knowledge in some or all of the following areas: Energy harvesting, micro-power management, energy efficiency methodologies, renewable energies, energy demand management, micro-grids, wireless sensor networks, system integration, conditional monitoring, asset tracking,  industry 4.0, power electronics and packaging.

The role requires direct management of Tyndall personnel & budgets as well as representation of Tyndall and overall project consortium interests with other stakeholders such as the European Commission, industry partners and funders, industry and academic associations, etc.

The Group leader will strategically form networks of academic and industry contacts and create consortia for proposal writing & undertaking projects, scoping studies as well as participating in committees, workshops & industry associations.

The Group leader will develop and lead an ongoing strategy for Tyndall leadership in providing ‘power IoT solutions’, co-ordinating multiple Tyndall activities in collaboration with other Tyndall Groups in Irish, EU & international proposals, projects, technology roadmapping, etc.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and lead the Group’s strategic research agenda and technology roadmap in line with Tyndall2025 Strategy and with reference to MNS Centre strategy, key industry partners and international trends/technology roadmaps.
  • Attract and recruit world-class research staff and post-graduate students in order to build and sustain a world-leading research team that will deliver highly trained graduate students, innovative technology platforms, commercialisable intellectual property and key publications and presentations in leading journals and high profile international conferences.
  • Provide leadership, management, coaching, mentoring and career development for an experienced team of professional research staff and postgraduate students.
  • Build high impact, collaborative relationships with world-leading research groups in Tyndall and in both national and international academia and industry.
  • Ensure the delivery of high quality, academic supervision and examination of students at postgraduate level within the group.
  • Secure sustainable funding from both industry and public organisations such as SFI, EI and EU H2020 in order to grow the team and to ensure its long term sustainability.
  • Actively engage in the highest quality project management, project co-ordination and budget management of research projects.
  • Work closely with Tyndall Commercial Centre in relation to all technology commercialisation activities and with UCC TTO in relation to IP/licensing opportunities.     
  • Engage with Tyndall MarComms to ensure the widespread communication of the group’s achievements and with Outreach to target the next generation of STEM graduates.
  • Ensure compliance with Tyndall’s Quality Management system and Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out additional duties as may be reasonably required within the scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • A post graduate degree, at Masters or PhD level, in Science or Engineering.
  • Typically, 15+ years post-graduate experience in R&D in ICT-related areas
  • Proven scientific/engineering/technical knowledge and innovation in power electronics.
  • Proven track-record in leading and managing high performing research teams, both through a line-management role and through matrix-management, including staff and graduate students at all levels from graduate to senior staff researcher.
  • Experience in successfully leading and managing multiple, multi-party, research projects including strong financial management skills to deliver large and complex projects on-time and within budget.
  • A track record of successfully raising funding for research, including the creation of collaborations between industry and public research organisations.
  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, strategic planning and implementation and communications (including report writing, interpersonal engagements and networking with key stakeholders and clients).
  • Demonstrated international profile in electronics for energy efficiency with a thorough knowledge of the related research landscape at a national, European and global level.

Desirable Criteria

  • A PhD in a relevant technical discipline
  • Formal project/programme management training
  • Lead author or co-author on publications in high impact IEEE peer-reviewed circuit journals and international conferences and/or on significant patents.
  • Proven experience in IP management, protection and commercialization.

Appointment may be made on the Senior Admin Scale IV (A) €77,420- €92,540; Senior Admin Scale IV (B) €81,356-€97,274. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
