Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

Established in 2004, the Tyndall National Institute is one of Europe’s leading centres in deep tech ICT research and development. It hosts over 600 researchers, engineers and support staff and has a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide. Tyndall National Institute is performing breakthrough research in photonics, electronics, micro-nano-technology and smart systems to deliver innovative solutions in life sciences that include medtech, biopharma and agritech. 

Tyndall’s ICT for Health Strategic Programme is driving an ABC ecosystem (i.e. combining Academic, Business and Clinical stakeholders) in which Tyndall researchers are working with academic leaders, many of the top companies in medtech and pharma industries, and with clinical experts. As a result, Tyndall hosts researchers in residence from leading healthtech companies such as Integer and Johnson and Johnson, and the ICT for Health Strategic Programme in Tyndall now represents approximately one third of the research activity across the institute. This reflects the growing opportunity for Tyndall to leverage our core strengths in human capital, global networks and world-class infrastructure to develop the next generation of intelligent medical devices and systems.

A key focus is on the development of high-tech ‘smart dressings’ for autonomous woundcare, to be jointly developed with our partners that include DeRoyal Industries – a leading provider of healthcare products and related business services - and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. 

As a result, the Tyndall National Institute is therefore seeking a highly motivated researcher to join our team in this exciting and rapidly expanding R&D field. The aims of these projects are to investigate the next generation of unobtrusive and multifunctional technologies intended for use in the treatment of chronic wounds including pressure, venous, and diabetic ulcers. The flexible and wearable systems should merge standard dressing materials with microtechnologies such as miniature actuators for control of pressure levels, sensors suitable for real-time feedback of dressing status, transmission protocols for wirelessly communicating that information to clinical personnel; and microcontrollers for system programming and control.

Key Responsibilities
The candidate will work in a team environment to:

  • Assess the state-of-the-art in ‘smart dressing’ technology on an ongoing basis, and prepare review articles based on the findings;
  • Develop novel woundcare devices that merge microelectronic technologies with conventional dressing materials; 
  • Prepare necessary ethical submissions, risk assessments and safety documentation as appropriate; 
  • Carry out preliminary characterisation of these devices in a laboratory setting;
  • Liaise with our project partners to prepare prototypes for clinical evaluation;
  • Publish high-quality articles in high-impact journals;
  • Identify opportunities for patent protection;
  • Continuously seek to add improvements and/or advancements to the system;
  • Report results to team leaders, partners, and funding agencies;
  • Contribute to future grant-writing activities in this area;
  • Comply with all relevant regulatory legislation, ethical considerations and safety regulations.
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and required Health & Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD (or equivalent industry experience) in a relevant discipline such as biomedical engineering, engineering, physics);
  • Typically 5+ years post-PhD experience in areas such as biomedical engineering, medical device design and development, or wearable technologies;
  • Strong track record in dissemination such as scientific paper writing, conference presentation and report writing;
  • Excellent organisational, project management and communication skills;
  • Laboratory experience and an ability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Desirable Criteria

  • Demonstrable experience in novel research involving micropumps, sensor technologies, microfluidics, embedded systems, microcontrollers or wireless interfaces;
  • Track record in high-impact scientific publishing;
  • Experience in design thinking or regulatory considerations for medical devices;
  • Embedded systems hardware/software design and characterization skills;
  • Staff or student supervision experience.

Skills and Experience

This is an exciting project in a fast-moving, industrially relevant area.  Reporting to the team leader of the research activity, the candidate will take a hands-on role, and will be responsible for the day-to-day execution of the technical research tasks outlined above. Scientific dissemination (preparation of regular internal reports, journal and conference publications, and industrial liaison) is an essential part of the position. Some international travel may also be required.

It is critical that the candidate has an ability to work in a team environment, as he/she will liaise closely with other team members engaged in developing complementary aspects of the platform. In addition, close cooperation with our industrial and clinical partners is required, who will provide support, supervision and direction throughout the research activity. The successful candidate should be highly motivated with excellent organizational and communications skills, demonstrate an understanding of the research environment, and have the ability to communicate his/her research and the potential to manage a research project.

In return, the position provides the opportunity to develop innovative solutions for medical technology challenges, as well as to gain valuable experience in design, fabrication and testing of next-generation devices and systems. The successful candidate will experience the excitement of working with high-profile industry on emerging technologies in a world-class research environment, and will have the opportunity to build the career profile associated with presentation at international conferences, workshops and industry meetings, and publication of the research in high impact journals.

The duration of the project is 12 months in the first instance, but is likely to be extended pending funding and the impact of the candidate.

Appointment may be made on the IUA Scale for Senior Post-Doctoral Researchers €47,764- €50,530 pa.  Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
