About Tyndall

Tyndall National Institute is a leading European research centre in integrated ICT hardware and systems. The institute employs almost 600 researchers, engineers and support staff, including 120 full-time graduate students.

The institutes 18000m2 of buildings contain more than 60 individual laboratories and 5 cleanrooms with classifications ranging from ISO Class 10,000 to ISO Class 100.

All areas are served by an extensive and varied HVAC system which includes 26 no. AHUs as well as Corrosive, Solvent & Process Exhausts.

Additional plant & utilities include Gas Boilers, Air Cooled Chillers, Compressed Air, Hydrogen & Vacuum generation/distribution, Electrical Generators, Sprinkler Systems, Fire & Gas detection systems as well as Building Management Systems.

Tyndall is a large energy user with an annual energy spend in excess of €1m, our EnMS is ISO 50001:2018 certified.

Tyndall is currently progressing a major capital investment programme which includes the upgrade or replacement of many of the sites Building Services & utilities.

Job description

Reporting to the Facilities Manager the Building Services Engineer will be responsible for the reliable and efficient operation of all Building Services.

You will provide expert guidance on reducing energy use and will be the system owner of the site Energy Management System.

You will manage a range of projects within the Facilities team and in conjunction with the UCC Capital Projects Office.

The role will be challenging and varied and will offer opportunities for skillset and career development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete a detailed assessment of all HVAC & associated systems. Develop a full understanding of the current operating parameters of each individual element as well as their integration with each other. Develop a basis of operation document to record this information. Keep this document up to date as equipment changes.
  • Identify end of life plant & equipment. Develop a replacement plan on a risk based approach. Utilise your training, experience and knowledge of current best practices to specify appropriate replacements. Complete the procurement process and project manage the replacement works to minimise operational downtime.
  • Identify energy saving opportunities across all utilities. Calculate the energy savings, develop business case, identify any financial supports available and complete grant applications. Measure and record all savings in line with the site ISO50001 Energy management policy.
  • Support the implementation of the site Asset Management system through the development of an Asset Register of all Building Services, including the generation of detailed maintenance plans.
  • Be fully aware of current trends in Building Services and all relevant statutory legislation that affects the role.
  • Design and Project Management {including Health & Safety, Financial, & Procurement} of minor works projects as required.
  • Liaise with the UCC Capital Projects Office, its architects and engineers through the planning, design, and supervision of major projects.
  • Provide On-Call cover to the site for Facilities related equipment out of hours on a rotational basis.

As the business needs continues to expand and evolve, it is likely that flexibility in regard to the allocation of specific duties will be necessary. Essential Criteria

  • Level 8 degree in Building Services or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline.
  • Typically 8+ year’s relevant engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated Energy Auditing experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of cleanroom design and operation including associated critical utilities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Building Management Systems operation.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of delivering Building Services engineering design within a consultancy practice.
  • Experience of delivering new Building Services in operational buildings.
  • ISO 50001 implementation or operation experience.
  • Commissioning experience.
  • Membership of EI, CIBSE or ASHRAE.
  • Operational experience of electrical distribution, fire alarm and gas detection systems.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD or Revit.
  • BIM experience

General Skills & Experience required:

  • Working knowledge of health and safety regulations combined with practical experience.
  • Ability to produce building services designs utilising CIBSE Design Guides.
  • Ability to analyse information and offer solutions that exceed expectations.
  • Exhibit a collaborative approach to dealing with others, develop good working relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals.
  • Ability to communicate and present to internal and external stakeholders in a professional manner, both written and verbally.
  • Good time and resource planning skills.
  • Budget planning and management experience.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development.

 Appointment may be made on the Grade 6A scale (B) €59,828– €75,527 per annum.  Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
