DP-2 Researcher: Reconfigurable Microwave RF Filters

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term 

The Advanced RF Technologies (ART) Group and the Microelectronics Circuits Centre Ireland (MCCI) at Tyndall National Institute (TNI) are currently advertising for the position of the Postdoctoral Researcher in Reconfigurable Microwave RF Filters for well-qualified and highly-motivated researchers with strong interest in filter synthesis techniques, filter tuning methods for planar and 3D filters, electromagnetic design of microwave components, tunable RF/microwave components and high-frequency integration and RF tuning methods.

The goal of this project is to develop new types of microwave RF filters with multiple levels of transfer function tunability (e.g, center frequency, bandwidth, transfer function type) alongside with tuning methods that facilitate autonomous reconfigurability within multiple octaves of the electromagnetic spectrum. The successful candidate will collaborate with industry and academia as part of an industry-led large-scale collaborative project and investigate the integration of these filters with other RF front-end components, high-frequency integration concepts using PCBs and off-the-self-components and advanced integration concepts using custom substrates and RF tuners.

This is an initial 12 months contract with scope for extension subject to performance and availability of funds.  

The successful candidate will become a member of a diverse and vibrant community of academics, research professionals and students at TNI and UCC and will have access to world-class RF characterization, antenna measurement and manufacturing facilities at TNI, UCC and the Microelectronics Centre Circuits Ireland (MCCI). Key responsibilities

  • Development of filter synthesis methods and high-frequency tuning concepts
  • Development of circuit models for filters, tuners and complex filter banks
  • Full-wave electromagnetic analysis of filters and other RF front-end components
  • Optimization methods using commercially-available EM software
  • Development of open/closed-loop tuning methods
  • Manufacturing of PCB circuits, assembly of SMD components, connectorized and RF probe-based characterization
  • Preparation of power point presentations and reports for project meetings
  • Preparation of research papers for IEEE journals and conferences
  • Supervise and assist MSc and PhD students
  • Participation in Education Ensure all activities
  • Compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD degree in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related discipline with a strong background in RF circuit design, Electromagnetic design, Microwave design
  • Strong knowledge of RF/Electromagnetic CAD design tools, e.g, ADS Keysight, CADENCE AWR, ANSYS HFSS, CST or equivalent.
  • Demonstration of experience with RF characterization using a PNA/VNA and RF probe station
  • Strong publication record in IEEE journal and conference publications

The appointment may be made on the Post-Doctoral Researchers scale €38,630 - €45,942 p.a. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with the public sector pay policy and years of experience.
