DP-2 Researcher: Highly-reconfigurable Microwave RF Filters

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The Advanced RF Technologies (ART) Group at Tyndall National Institute (TNI) and University College Cork is advertising for the position of the Postdoctoral Researcher in Highly-Reconfigurable Microwave RF Filters for well-qualified and highly-motivated researchers with extensive experience in one of more of the following: filter synthesis techniques, tunable filters (planar, 3D waveguide and acoustic SAW/BAW/FBAR), low loss RF tuning methods and low-cost integration methods for high-frequency RF filters. The post holder will be employed as the lead researcher of and ambitions research project that aims to will develop highly-reconfigurable RF filters for the next generation of 5G communication systems.

In particular, the post holder post-holder is expected to develop new types of RF filtering architectures with multiple levels of transfer function tunability (e.g, center frequency, bandwidth, transfer function type) and innovative tuning methods that facilitate wide RF tuning. High-frequency and highly-versatile PCB and 3D integration methods will also be developed. The post-doctoral researcher is expected to manage the project, co-supervise MS and PhD students and participate in the training and educational activities at University College Cork.

The successful candidate will become a member of a diverse and vibrant community of academics, research professionals and students at TNI and UCC and will have access to world-class manufacturing, and RF characterization facilities at TNI, UCC. Duration would be 1 year, with the scope of extension.

Key responsibilities

  • Development of filter synthesis methods and high-frequency tuning concepts
  • Development of circuit models for filters, tuners and complex filter banks
  • Explore alternative integration techniques including PCBs, 3D Printer substrates and other high-frequency glass-based or piezoelectric substrates
  • Full-wave electromagnetic analysis of filters and other RF front-end components
  • Optimization methods using commercially-available EM software
  • Manufacturing of PCB circuits, assembly of SMD components.
  • Perform connectorized and RF probe-based on wafer/off-waver testing
  • Preparation of power point presentations and reports for project meetings
  • Preparation of research papers for IEEE journals and conferences
  • Supervise and assist MS and PhD students
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD degree in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related discipline demonstrating strong background in RF filter design or tunable RF components.
  • Strong knowledge of RF/Electromagnetic CAD design tools, e.g, ADS Keysight, CADENCE AWR, ANSYS HFSS, CST or equivalent.
  • Demonstration of experience with RF characterization using a PNA/VNA and RF probe station
  • Strong publication record in IEEE journal and conference publications

The appointment may be made on the IUA scale for Post-Doctoral Researchers €39,130-€46,442 p.a. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with the public sector pay policy and years of experience.
