Description

The Advanced RF Technologies (ART) Group at Tyndall National Institute (TNI) and University College Cork is offering a fully-funded PhD position for well-qualified and highly-motivated individuals with strong interest in Electromagnetic Analysis and RF design of Microwave/Millimeter-Wave RF components (filters, couplers) and Antenna Sub-systems. The successful candidates will be involved in an interdisciplinary and ambitious project that investigates novel high-frequency tuning mechanisms using new types of materials that can be re-shaped/actuated/reconfigured with the purpose of realizing multi-configurable 3D RF/antenna systems. The project will explore key concepts that enable ultra-wide tuning range, multiple levels of reconfigurability as for example center frequency, bandwidth and radiation characteristics (e.g, gain, beam direction, polarization) as well as operability to millimeter-wave frequencies (> 30 GHz). The research addresses the needs of the next generation of communications (5G+/6G) where high data-rates, low latency and dynamic spectrum access will be facilitated by highly-reconfigurable RF hardware that can adapt to on-demand user and spectral needs.

The successful candidates will become a member of a diverse and vibrant community of students, research professionals and academics at TNI and UCC and will have access to world-class RF characterization, antenna measurement and manufacturing facilities at TNI and UCC. Key responsibilities

The PhD student will work under the supervision of Prof. Psychogiou and will be a member of a research team comprising MS and PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and research professionals. The successful candidate is expected to carry out independent and innovative research that will lead to high-impact publications (e.g, IEEE journals and conferences). The position will involve RF design and electromagnetic analysis of RF passive components, filters, antenna beamforming networks and antenna arrays, manufacturing/assembly and RF characterization. Progress reports, literature reviews and participation in conferences are to be expected. Participation in academic curriculum development or instruction is to be expected.

Essential Criteria

  • First or upper second-class honors degree (or equivalent international degree) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, physics or related relevant discipline.
  • The candidate must have taken classes in: Electronic circuits, Electromagnetics, Microwave engineering, RF circuits and Antennas
  • Experience with one or more RF/Electromagnetic CAD design tools, e.g, ADS Keysight, CADENCE AWR, ANSYS HFSS, CST or equivalent.
  • The candidate must have high analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • The candidate must demonstrate proficiency in English alongside with good scientific writing and communication skills.

Desired Criteria

  • Master degree/Diploma (5-year degree) in Electrical/Electronic engineering with an emphasis in RF/Microwave design and/or Antennas.
  • Master or bachelor’s thesis or independent research study in areas relevant to the position
  • Experience using network analyzers, RF probe station and antenna testing
  • IEEE conference/journal publications

What we offer: A fully-funded PhD position that includes a stipend of €18,500/year for up to four years or graduation (whatever comes first) and full coverage of academic fees/tuition (approx. €5,500/year). Full coverage of travel expenses to IEEE conferences in Europe/overseas to present the outcomes of the project. Fully-funded training opportunities.
