SafetyBot: Safe Collaborative Robotics in the Reconfigurable Factories of the Future

01/04/2022
30/04/2025

SafetyBot will realize Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled Safety Solutions, including 3D Time of Flight depth sensing, to service the Smart Reconfigurable Factories of the Future. This will enable immersive collaboration between human workers, robots and automation equipment.

Currently, commissioning a manufacturing cell entails a combination of physical safety curtains and safety technology at cell entry point, using any number of traditional technologies such as laser scanners, pressure sensitive mats and stop switches. However this set up has some limitations:

  • Beyond the cell entry point, nothing in the cell knows where the operator is
  • The safety action is to shut down the equipment
  • Resuming activity in the cell is time consuming and requires qualified personnel

These limitations result in manufacturing downtime and loss of productivity at significant expense to manufacturing companies.

Enabled by advances in Industry 4.0, to meet the increased complexity arising from personalised manufacture in the smart factories of the future, it will be necessary to fundamentally alter how factory processes are planned, scheduled and controlled to satisfy customer demands. To support the transition from manual to highly-automated and flexibly reconfigurable manufacturing in future factories, new dynamic safety technology and certification is necessary. SafetyBot aims to deliver these prerequisites in a way that will ultimately provide i) measurable improvements in safety and working conditions, ii) simplified and cost-efficient commissioning, and iii) automated safety certification for industrial manufacturing equipment.

Consortium:
Analog Devices is the coordinating partner in the SafetyBot consortium, which also includes Emdalo Technologies, Modular Automation and Tyndall National Institute.

  • Analog Devices is a world leader in the design and manufacture of a broad portfolio of analog, mixed signal and signal processing integrated circuits. For SafetyBot, Analog Devices will provide expertise in 3D sensing technologies, embedded development for modular safety technology and industrial validation and support certification and commercialisation activities.

  • Emdalo Technologies is a software engineering development company specializing in delivering solutions in Embedded Systems, Machine Learning, AI and IIoT applications. Emdalo Technologies will implement safe autonomous systems incorporating AI and sensor fusion in the SafetyBot project.

  • Modular Automation delivers innovative custom automation, build to print and tooling solutions for the world’s most advanced manufacturers. In SafetyBot, Modular Automation will provide guidance on the roll-out of SAFETYBOT technologies in real industrial environments.

  • Tyndall National Institute, one of Europe’s leading research centres in ICT hardware and systems, has extensive experience in the development of smart systems, embedded hardware and software, connectivity and communications technologies. It will lead the development of SAFETYBOT requirements specification and support work on safe ubiquitous sensing, edge processing and interoperability.

Enterprise Ireland Projects

SafetyBot is a three year project running from April 2022 to April 2025. The project secured €2.85m funding from the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund, a €500 million challenge-based fund, managed by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and administered by Enterprise Ireland
