Job description:

Microelectronic Circuits Centre Ireland (MCCI) is an EI / IDA technology centre hosted at Tyndall National Institute.  Its mission is to carry out industry-led world-class Analog, Mixed-Signal and RF integrated circuit research and to deliver trained people and IP to industry.  MCCI is already collaborating with 35 companies and many of the staff eventually transfer into the thriving microelectronics industry in Ireland.  MCCI targets real-life applications with its research and currently has projects in diverse topics such as DNA detection for food safety, next generation optical communications, bio-sensing, imaging for security applications and early cancer detection.

MCCI is carrying out innovative research in the areas of Sensor Interfaces, Data-converters, Frequency Synthesis, High speed optical transceivers and Power management integrated circuits to enable new applications. With a focus on advanced geometry process nodes, Digitally-Assisted-Analog techniques such as digital pre-distortion, post-correction and calibration can be used in such deep-submicron technologies to improve the performance of traditional Analog circuits and these techniques are at the core of MCCI research.

The MCCI Centre at the Tyndall National Institute, University College, Cork, invites applications for a Senior Design Engineer – Analog Mixed Signal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute and lead innovative research in Analog, Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuit, with an emphasis on data-converters and sensor interfaces.
  • Take a lead technical role in existing research projects under the direction of a Senior Researcher or Principal Investigator to develop new architectures, circuits and algorithms.
  • Work on collaborative projects with MCCI industry partners, e.g. Xilinx, Analog Devices, Cypress Semiconductor, On Semi, u-Blox, M/A-COM,….
  • Interact closely with and support postgraduate research students studying for a Masters or a PhD (may have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day to day research).
  • Engage in the dissemination of the results of research, as directed by and with the support of a Senior Researcher or Principal Investigator.
  • Independently carry out small projects and feasibility studies including responsibility for associated administrative and management tasks.
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required.
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree (upper 2nd class honour’s) in Electronics Engineering or related discipline with at least 8 years’ experience in Analog, Mixed-Signal or RF circuit design
  • - OR -
  • Master’s Degree in Electronics Engineering, or related discipline with at least 5 years’ experience in Analog, Mixed-Signal or RF circuit design
  • Evidence of successful execution of Analog, Mixed-Signal or RF circuits at block level through to tapeout
  • A thorough understanding of scientific engineering concepts in IC design
  • Ability to work independently and take a leadership role in  an R&D Analog, Mixed-Signal projects

Desirable Criteria

  • PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • Expertise in area of Analog, Mixed-Signal or RF circuit design on 28nm CMOS or more advanced process node
  • Experience with other IC technologies such as FinFet, FDSOI, SiGe BiCMOS & GaN
  • Proven track record of producing successful working silicon for Analog, Mixed-Signal or RF in submicron CMOS
  • Experience of silicon characterization
  • Capability to take full responsibility for successful execution and delivery of small to medium scale research projects.
  • Ability to work independently, have a lead role in research projects and to contribute as a team member in larger research projects
  • Experience with industry standard CAD tools such as Matlab, Cadence and Mentor.
  • Experience setting up such CAD tools and associated Process Design Kits.
  • Good planning, organisational and communication skills
  • Strong evidence of being a self-starter
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Experience in high quality technical documentation

Appointment may be made on the Grade 6 Admin III Scale (B) €49,181- €58,719.  In all instances the successful appointment will be at the first point of the scale
