Senior Post-Doctorate Researcher – MEMS

Tyndall is home to a high-tech national research infrastructure unique in Ireland and is a national research asset. Hosting the only full CMOS, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and III-V Wafer Semiconductor fabrication facilities and services in Ireland, Tyndall is capable of creating opportunities and prototyping new products for its target industries.

The successful candidate will be a key member of Tyndall’s MEMS Research Group under Integrated Power for Energy Systems (IPES) research program to conduct research on microfabrication and heterogeneous integration of Integrated Magnetic Devices and other high-frequency MEMS components. The candidate may also be engaged in wafer-level characterization of the fabricated devices to capture their performance prior to integration and packaging. They shall also prepare and submit progress reports and project documents to the Project Manager throughout the project. In addition, the candidate will have the opportunity to produce high-quality research articles for International Conferences and Journals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the Process design, development and optimization for Integrated Magnetic Devices and high-frequency Piezoelectric Transformers
  • Lead Process design, development and optimization of microfabrication processes for interconnection of MEMS devices towards 2.5D / 3D Heterogeneous Integration
  • Generation of intellectual property (IP) and the preparation of high-quality research publications
  • Mentoring Master’s and PhD students in the group
  • Generating new ideas and participation in writing proposals to secure research grants
  • Showcasing research outcomes in reputed international conferences
  • Presenting updates to all stakeholders (verbal and written reports)
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may be reasonably required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in a relevant Science or Engineering discipline, specializing in micro-technology, microsystems, or MEMS.
  • Excellent research track record with a minimum of four international peer-reviewed publications.
  • At least four years of hands-on cleanroom experience, plus including a minimum of two years of post-PhD experience in microfabrication and process development.
  • Expertise in electronic or MEMS device characterization in one or more of the following areas: electrical, material, or structural evaluation.
  • Experience working with high-frequency, thin-film-based MEMS or other microsystems.
  • A minimum of two years of employment in a company or research organization focused on MEMS or micro-technology.
  • Proven ability to generate new ideas, prepare research proposals, and participate in competitive funding calls.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, including experience in writing peer-reviewed papers.
  • Experience in project planning and Project Management.

Desirable Criteria

  • Hands-on experience in Lithography and Pattern Transfer, RF & Magnetron Sputtering, CVD, Wet etch, Dry Etch (both, RIE & DRIE) and Electroplating processes
  • Hands-on experience on SEM, AFM, FIB, XRD, Network Analyzer, Probe station, etc.
  • Hand-on experience in micro-assembly or packaging of micro-devices
  • Experience in developing magnetic devices

Appointment may be made on the UCC Senior Post-Doctorate Researcher scale € 53,770-€ 58,479 per annum.  Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
