Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The International Energy Research Centre (IERC), hosted at Tyndall National Institute (TNI) is a multi-disciplinary, collaborative research group, who conduct specific pieces of research to meet the needs of industry.  The IERC is recruiting for the role of research assistant with a focus on building energy performance for the Building Services and Energy Performance team.  The role will work on projects that are both internally and externally funded, and will work under the direction of the Senior Researcher and Project Coordinator. Therefore the optimal candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. An honours degree in an energy, sustainability, science or engineering related discipline is a must. An MSc. Is preferred

The Role

The IERC has recently won a number of H2020 and other funded projects that focus on activities to enhance building energy performance. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the successful delivery of these projects through conducting high quality research, engaging with relevant stakeholders and assisting to disseminate and communicate the project results to the wider audience. Examples of the types of project that you may be asked to work on include:

A new project aiming to increase uptake of energy audits and facilitate implementation of energy conservation measures among European SMEs using an innovative self-financing mechanism.

The NOVICE project which aims to test the validity of a new business model for ESCOs that combines energy efficiency and demand side response into an enhanced energy performance contract.

The RECO2ST project which aims to develop a new refurbishment assessment tool and demonstrate a package of energy efficiency measures that can be retrofitted to residential buildings to bring them to NZEB standard at lower cost and with less disruption than standard retrofits.

This post is a full-time, specified purpose position linked to the funding opportunities of the IERC.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance in conducting research activities, including planning, organizing, conducting, and communicating research studies within the overall scope of an IERC research project.
  • Carry out literature reviews, stakeholder engagement activities, and data analysis to feed into project results.
  • Gather, collate and analyse quantitative and qualitative data sets relating to the energy performance of buildings.
  • Assist to organise and run events such as focus groups, surveys, webinars, and workshops on topics relating to building energy performance and/or energy auditing.
  • Write reports detailing the findings and/or outcomes from the research as required to meet project deliverables.
  • Contribute to the publication of conference and journal papers relating to project outcomes.
  • Work with Senior Researchers in developing plans for future research projects.
  • Participate in stakeholder and public engagement activities as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
  • Perform other related duties as necessary to the work of the IERC.

Essential Criteria

  • An honours degree or equivalent in an energy, sustainability, science, engineering or related subject.
  • Strong demonstrable experience in at least 2 of the following: Energy auditing, building energy performance, energy efficiency, energy performance contracting, energy services, building services engineering, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to a tight schedule.
  • Demonstrated capability of working effectively within a team to achieve results.
  • A commitment to personal growth and development.

Desirable Criteria

  • An MSc or equivalent in an energy, sustainability, science, engineering or related subject.
  • At least 1 year’s previous research experience.
  • Demonstrated data and statistical analysis skills.
  • Experience in any of the following areas would be beneficial: carrying out energy audits and recommending energy saving measures; persuading SMEs to implement energy saving measures; designing and conducting surveys and focus groups with a range of stakeholders; planning, organising and running workshops, training courses, webinars and other events.
  • Highly self-motivated and able to demonstrate initiative.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with industry.
  • Evidence of excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Excellent report writing skills.

This is a full-time, specified purpose position with the IERC, starting at appointment and tied to available funding.

Appointment may be made on the IUA Scale for Research Assistants  €22,109-€34,612 pa.  The successful appointment may be at a level higher than the first point of the scale.
