JT-1 Applications Engineer in Smart Manufacturing

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The Wireless Sensor Network Group (WSN) at the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork is currently advertising for the position of Applications Engineer for Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled safety solutions for the Factory of the Future.

The WSN group at the Tyndall National Institute has a specific research focus in the development of smart systems for Industry 4.0 with core strengths in Information and Communications Technologies to develop the next generation of breakthrough Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled edge processing and Interoperability technologies for smart manufacturing environments. These systems will incorporate multiple processing capabilities, sensing modalities and communications technologies, (e.g. SoC/FPGA hybrid platforms, Wireless and Industrial Ethernet connectivity solutions, Time of Flight (ToF)) to realize interoperable, AI enabled safety solutions to service the Factory of the Future, enabling immersive collaboration between human workers, robots and automation equipment.

As a result, the Tyndall National Institute is therefore seeking a highly motivated Applications Engineer in the area of embedded systems addressing edge processing and interoperability solutions for smart manufacturing.   The successful candidate will be part of a team of multi-disciplinary researchers with expertise in microsystems technology, wireless sensors, electronics and low power system design and algorithm development as well as sensor data fusion in embedded systems to execute industry defined applied research projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • To work independently in conjunction with the Principal Investigator/Project/Team Leader to develop edge hardware & software solutions addressing industrial connectivity and edge processing
  • Work with project managers in conjunction with senior researchers and Tyndall’s industry partners to identify and deliver on their embedded systems needs with respect to Smart Manufacturing edge processing and communication systems
  • Work with the Industry partners in the development of a project demonstrator that showcases practical applications of the platform technologies developed during the overall project.
  • Planning, organizing of appropriate demonstrators and communicating Tyndall’s research activities as part of the groups outreach programs
  • Carry out administrative work to support the program of research and ensure all project deliverables and milestones are achieved in a timely manner
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and required Health & Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • A primary degree in Electronic Engineering or a related discipline
  • Typically 4 years’ experience in developing Embedded Systems Hardware/Software
  • Proven experience in embedded SW development for complex analog and digital systems
  • Proven experience in analog and digital PCB design for complex multi- layer embedded systems
  • Experience with relevant lab-equipment
  • Proven participation in team projects in the development of applied engineering research and delivery of expected milestones in a timely manner

Desirable Criteria

  • A postgraduate degree in a related discipline
  • Experience of project managing (academic and industry) R&D projects
  • Strong communication skills, including report writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience in working with industrial communication systems
  • Experience working with embedded AI systems
  • Experience in working with robotic systems
  • A proven ability to work independently to a tight schedule
  • High levels of initiative, self-management, achievement-orientation, and motivation
  • Capability of working effectively within a team to achieve results

Appointment may be made on the Admin Grade 5 Scale B (new entrants) salary scale €43,752- €53,834 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
