Tyndall National Institute at University College, Cork invites applications for a Masters Scholarship.

The increasing demand for smaller, faster and lower energy electronic products with new functionalities highlights the need for miniaturization of the electronic power conversion circuits. A significant issue in the miniaturization of those circuits is the size reduction of the energy storage and transfer components such as inductors which are essential in power supplies and currently occupy a relatively large ~30% of the volume. In this project we will utilise a recently developed magnetic material and architecture to further miniaturise microinductor fabrication on silicon while enhancing the properties and performance of the devices. This project is funded under the Science Foundation Ireland Technology Innovation Development Award Programme. The M.Sc. postgraduate scholar will conduct research as part of a larger team investigating electrochemical materials development for integrated device fabrication.  

Responsibilities

This postgraduate Masters by research position is in the area of Electrochemical Materials & Energy. The successful candidate will:

  • Perform innovative research in the electrochemistry of conductor and magnetic materials.
  • Optimise the fabrication route for the novel integrated magnetic material
  • Fabricate devices with the optimised materials.
  • Fully characterise the materials and devices
  • Work on as part of a team to develop intellectual property for the novel materials and engineered architectures
  • Engage in the dissemination and further development of the results of the research. 

Essential Criteria

  • The minimum academic qualification is a first or upper second class honours degree (or an equivalent international degree) in chemistry or chemical engineering.

Desirable Criteria

  • The successful candidate will be highly innovative with a strong desire to create world-beating electrochemical research for real-life applications.
  • The successful candidate will be highly analytical with good interpersonal and organizational skills.

An annual student stipend of €18,000.00 applies for this successful candidate for this position.  Yearly University academic fees will paid by the Tyndall National Institute.
