Tyndall has published its Annual Report for 2017. The theme of the report ‘Impact from Excellence – From Atoms to Systems’ sets out how the institute delivers on our vision to be the premier ICT research institute worldwide in generating economic impact through research excellence in our chosen fields.
Research Highlights
Research outcome highlights range from fundamental understanding of superconductivity, through to the world’s most advanced demonstration of a new highly scalable optical access network architecture. As well as applications that spread from medical and smart agriculture devices through to analysis of the chemistry of medieval Gaelic vellum manuscripts.
Collaboration Opportunities
Tyndall’s research collaboration opportunities grew, with the institute becoming a major partner in two new SFI Research Centres announced in 2017; CONFIRM for manufacturing of the future, and VistaMilk for precision-based dairying.
Horizon 2020
We continued to enjoy Horizon 2020 success, with 16 new projects funded; increasing our total participation to 56 projects since the programme’s launch.
Industry Engagement
Industry engagement flourished in 2017, with almost 50 new industry-driven research programmes commencing. Notably, a major contract was agreed with Rockley Photonics to advance silicon photonics from lab to market.
Future Developments
A significant upgrade and expansion of Tyndall was included by Government in the National Development Plan 2018-2027 in early 2018. We are grateful for the confidence that this shows in the work of the Institute and look forward to the opportunity it provides to greatly enhance our capabilities and economic impact.
