PCM-9 Senior Software Engineer

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term (36 months)

Tyndall is one of Europe’s leading research centres in integrated ICT hardware and systems, and the largest facility of its type in Ireland. The Institute is a world leader in the development of navigation systems for image-guided surgery and this senior software engineering opportunity is in this area of research.

This position is a senior engineering position in the DEEP FIELD ERC Consolidator Award at Tyndall National Institute under the direction of Dr. Pádraig Cantillon-Murphy (Principal Investigator) at Tyndall National Institute.

The Senior Software Engineer will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator in the Electronic and Electromagnetic Systems Group at Tyndall National Institute. The Engineer will be expected to develop significant research activities in the area of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Embedded system software implementation for magnetic tracking applications
  • Software architecture definition and implementation
  • Software-hardware network integration for magnetic tracking technology using established connectivity routines
  • Analysis and report the results at project meetings
  • Disseminate the outcomes to peer‐reviewed academic publications and presentations at conferences of international standing.
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • Primary degree in computer science, engineering or a relevant discipline to the role
  • Typically 10+ years relevant experience in industry or academia.
  • Typically 3 years+ experience in the area of software engineering preferably in data acquisition and control systems
  • Research experience in data acquisition using Labview and Arduino controllers or similar tools.
  • Experience with managing multiple projects and timelines
  • Strong circuit level hardware design skills (PCB layout and design) and a good familiarity of firmware design in the application of sensor interfacing and electronic data acquisition systems
  • Demonstrated experience with OrCAD, Pads, PowerPCB or similar circuit design tools
  • Demonstrated experience in programming to include one or more of: Java, Visual Basic, SQL and VHDL/Verilog.
  • Excellent attention to detail and technical writing.
  • Capability of working effectively within a team to achieve results.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate a high level of initiative through achievements.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in ISO 17000 conformity assessment

Appointment may be made on the Admin III Grade 6 Scale B (new entrants) salary scale €51,042 - €60,941 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
