Established in 2004, the Tyndall National Institute is one of Europe’s leading centres in deep tech ICT research and development. It hosts over 600 researchers, engineers and support staff and has a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide. Tyndall National Institute is performing breakthrough research in photonics, electronics, micro-nano-technology and smart systems to deliver innovative solutions in life sciences including medtech, biopharma and agritech. Tyndall’s ICT for Health Strategic Programme is driving an ABC ecosystem (i.e. combining Academic, Business and Clinical stakeholders), in which Tyndall researchers are working with academic leaders (national and international), many of the top companies in medtech and pharma industries, and in collaboration with clinical experts.  This ensures that Tyndall research delivers impact in terms of clinical utility and commercial opportunity. Tyndall is host to both IPIC (Irish Photonic Integration Centre) and MCCI (the Microelectronics Circuits Centre Ireland), and is a collaborator in the CONNECT Centre for Future Networks & Communications (Internet of Things), the Insight Centre for Big Data Analytics, the CONFIRM Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and the VistaMilk (Smart Agritech Centre for the Dairy Industry).

Tyndall hosts researchers in residence from leading healthtech companies such as Integer and Johnson and Johnson, and the ICT for Health Strategic Programme in Tyndall represents approximately one third of the research activity across the institute. This reflects the growing opportunity for Tyndall’s key enabling technologies to enable predictive, preventive, personalized, participatory and precision medicine, through new generations of smart medical devices, and smart solutions for advanced healthtech manufacturing. Tyndall is a leader in the design, development and evaluation of emerging smart solutions, which require integration of a range of novel sensors, components and materials for additional functionality, while ensuring the prerequisite miniaturisation and cost constraints of the application scenarios are fully addressed. Tyndall acts as a gateway for healthtech industry customers, providing world-class facilities and expertise for the development of smart healthtech solutions, but also helping to identify technologies and expertise from outside Tyndall where applicable, to ensure technology development is enabled in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible.

Purpose of the role

Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork invites applications for the position as Principal Electronic Design Engineer in the Life Sciences Interface Group.  Reporting to the Head of the Tyndall Life Sciences Interface Group, this is an exciting opportunity for you to help define and implement applied research projects in a variety of fast-moving, industry relevant areas.  You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary industry-aligned researchers with expertise in microsystems technology, wireless sensors, biochemical sensors, electronics and low power system hardware and software design to execute industry defined applied research projects.

Activities will include applied research implementation, hardware/software co-design, team building, project management, researcher supervision, and travel to project meetings at customer / partner sites as applicable, and to international conferences, workshops, industry meetings and project proposal meetings.

Key Responsibilities

You will be required to lead and coordinate the system specification, design and deployment of a range of sensor systems incorporating the necessary communications, processing, sensor interfacing and power supply conditioning necessary to enable healthtech industry defined applications. You will have expertise in the specification, design and testing of sensor solutions with activities ranging from communications protocols, device driver development and modification, circuit design, PCB layout, firmware development using C and other programming languages, product performance characterization and system testing, processing, sensor interfacing and power supply conditioning as applicable to healthtech industry defined applications.

You will be a member of the Life Sciences Interface Group and lead a team involved in the design, development, assembly and testing of (bio)sensors and systems.  Reporting to the Head of the Life Sciences Interface Group, you will:

  • Support the Head of the Life Sciences Interface Group to engage relevant stakeholders including representatives of Government departments, funding agencies, industry organisations, multinational, indigenous companies and clinical groups.
  • Drive innovation in autonomous biosensor systems within the LSI group and through collaborations with the Tyndall Bioelectronics Cluster,
  • Be responsible for initiating new proposals and projects, developing and delivering selected aspects of the overall Tyndall National Institute 2025 strategy.
  • Partner with Tyndall’s Business Development, and ICT for Health team to engage with potential customers and collaborators to scope out new projects.  
  • Be responsible for leading a portfolio of collaborative projects with strategic industry, clinical and/or academic partners for biosensors and systems for life sciences applications.
  • Ensure excellence in the delivery of all research outputs, including technical reports, peer reviewed publications, filed intellectual property, prototype and demonstrators.
  • Provide leadership of an autonomous biosensor systems engineering team.
  • Establish and support externally-funded research activities.
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • To carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • An Honours degree in a relevant discipline of science or engineering.
  • Typically 15+ years  industrial or postgraduate experience including the development of instrumentation for autonomous sensor systems for life sciences applications.
  • Strong technical competence related to electronic sensors and systems for life sciences applications including medtech and/or biopharma.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, have a lead technical role in research or design projects and to contribute in driving larger multi-disciplinary and cross-functional research projects.
  • Experience of transferring ICT related devices from R&D to manufacturing.
  • Experience in defining strategic direction for technology teams.
  • Experience in project management in academia and industrial environments.
  • Demonstrated ability in personnel management including R&D team management.

Desirable Criteria

  • A postgraduate qualification in technology and/or business.
  • Experience in preparation of competitive research proposals for national and international funding programmes would be advantageous.
  • Experience in design of electronics for compliance with medical device regulations.
  • Track record of customer management and development.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills.

Appointment may be made on the Grade 7 Admin V Scale (B) €71,465 - €93,302 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
