Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The Photonics Centre at Tyndall National Institute seeks a dynamic and customer focused  Industry Engagement Project Manager to lead a number of European and National programmes. The Photonics Centre is one of Europe’s leading photonics research centres with 200 researchers focused on developing leading edge technology and its transition to market to deliver both economic and societal benefits. From future optical communications networks, to displays to smart medical devices. It is also home to the Irish Photonics Integration Centre (IPIC), Ireland’s national photonics research centre, in partnership with Ireland’s leading universities and institutes of technology.

We have recently secured a number of European awards from H2020 programmes that are tasked with developing ground breaking technologies and to support Europe, and Ireland’s, SMEs strengthen their technology base, secure investment and support their scaling. To support these activities, we require a dynamic individual to lead our engagement in these projects, with a specific focus to work closely with companies, European research leaders and government agencies to identify opportunities, engage new partners, drive the transfer of new technologies to market and support the scaling of photonics enabled SMEs and start-ups. A central element to this role will be to lead the Photonics Ireland National Technology Platform (, its engagement in Photonics21 (the European technology platform), with other national and regional platforms from across the globe and to lead the co-ordination of photonics activities across Ireland.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent Tyndall and Photonics Ireland in large Europe-wide projects and ensure that project the milestones and deliverables are achieved, for example Medphab - Europe’s first Pilot Line dedicated to manufacturing, testing, validation and up-scaling of new photonics technologies for medical diagnostics. Here you will engage with our partners, such as Philips Healthcare and Stryker, to develop the customer base and exploitation plan.  
  • Be the lead contact for the Photonics Ireland National Technology Platform, managing the engagement with Irish companies and international technology platforms, including Photonics21, the European Photonics Platform. This includes the development of supports for photonics-enabled start-up companies and SMEs, covering technology development, investment and scaling;
  • Engage end-user companies to showcase the benefits of photonics through direct engagement, events (national and international) and trade shows;  
  • Support the delivery of IPIC’s entrepreneurial training programmes, including the IPIC Bootcamp in partnership with NDRC;
  • Support develop the Photonics Ireland pavilion at Photonics West, the world’s largest conference and trade show with over 20,000 attendees; 
  • Support the organisation of the Annual IPIC Industry Workshop;
  • Prepare reports as required for European and National projects;
  • Manage project budgets;
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required;
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system;
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards;
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • Minimum of a degree in a physical sciences or engineering subject
  • Typically, 5+years’ experience in external engagement, specifically in R&D or technology development/commercialisation
  • Proven experience in the establishment of external partnerships
  • Evidence of establishing and delivering new activities, projects or networks

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working in multi-million euro EU funded research projects including multiple academic and industry partners
  • Track record of working with SMEs and start-up companies
  • Experience of developing industry networks
  • Experience of organising stands at industry events/trade shows 
  • Background in either photonics or manufacturing industries
  • Experience in one or more of the following: strategic planning, R&D innovation processes, and/or technology road mapping
  • Experience of drafting national or international research proposals
  • Strong communications, interpersonal and team working skills

Appointment may be made on the Grade 6 (Admin III) salary scale - €50,042 to €59,746. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
