Leader in Integrated ICT Hardware & Systems

Researcher in Photonics Packaging

POB-39 Researcher in Photonics Packaging

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The Photonics Packaging Group at the Tyndall Institute invites applications for an exciting position as a Postdoctoral researcher. The position takes responsibility for managing a number of academic and industrial research projects. These projects address diverse applications, including optical communications, medical devices, sensors and diagnostics. Many of the technologies developed will proceed to manufacture through the PIXAPP Packaging Pilot Line, so the candidate should be able to demonstrate an ability to bring ideas from technical concepts to working prototypes. Most projects are operated under fixed timelines, so experience in project management and an ability to prepare and present technical reports would be highly desirable. As many projects are based on industrial collaborations, experience working with industry is highly desirable. Candidates with practical experience working with photonic devices and optics are preferred.

Job Responsibilities

  • Managing a number of academic (eg. European H2020 projects) and industrial research projects, specialising in the design and packaging of fully working prototypes.
  • Fiber and micro optical packaging of photonic devices in the packaging laboratory.
  • Preparation and presentation of technical reports.
  • Managing projects within an ISO controlled environment.
  • Participate in education and public engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in physics or engineering.
  • Experience in photonics and/or integrated microelectronics.
  • Experience in the design, fabrication, packaging or testing of integrated semiconductor devices, ideally integrated photonic devices.
  • Excellent communication and technical report writing skills.
  • Experience presenting your research to a technical audience.

Desirable Criteria

  • Industry experience would be highly desirable.
  • Track record of managing multiple projects would be highly desirable.
  • Experience in optical design (eg. Zemax) would be highly desirable.
