POB-43 Senior Researcher in Biomedical Packaging

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The Photonics Packaging Group at the Tyndall Institute invites applications for an exciting position as Senior Researcher in Biomedical Packaging. The position takes responsibility for overseeing and implementing research activities across a range of biomedical research projects. This includes the design, prototyping and testing of medical devices and sensors using photonics. Much of this research in performed in collaboration with national and international research partners, both academic and industry partners.

The Senior Researcher in Biomedical Packaging will take responsibility for both internal and external project deliverables. This includes: 1) Defining and managing a range of biomedical research projects, 2) Design of biomedical prototypes using a range of photonic, electronic and mechanical technologies, 3) Assembling these prototypes in the Photonics Packaging Laboratory using advanced packaging equipment, 4) Testing of prototypes prior to delivery to partners for evaluation and clinical trials. 5) Preparation of technical project reports, including reporting to funding agencies and industry partners. The position involves international travel, including attendance at major conferences and exhibitions to give technical presentations to large audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing biomedical based research projects, in terms of initial project scoping and definition, project implementation and completion. This will include managing and supporting other (e.g. early career) researchers in the group to ensure they complete critical project tasks.
  • Managing the design of biomedical demonstrators using design software such as optical design (e.g. Zemax) and mechanical design (e.g. Solidworks).
  • Implementation of project designs using the advanced packaging and assembly equipment within the Photonic Packaging Group’s facilities at Tyndall.
  • Support testing of biomedical demonstrators, including pre-testing prior to clinical trials by research partners.
  • Preparation of technical reports for internal and external stakeholders (e.g. funding agencies).
  • Support project dissemination and group outreach activities.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD qualified with typically 5 years academic and/or industrial experience.
  • Experience in photonic and electronic packaging.
  • Ability to take photonic concepts from initial design through to full prototypes.
  • Experience in the design of integrated photonic devices and packages, including optical and electrical design.
  • Experience designing and developing photonic-based biomedical devices, especially in a research environment. This can include the development of photonic-based medical devices, bio-sensors or medical instruments.
  • Track record of managing academic and/or industry research projects.
  • Experience managing and supporting early career researchers and students.
  • Experience presenting your research to a large technical audience.
  • Excellent communication and technical report writing skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in integrated photonic device fabrication and test.
  • Experience in microfluidics (e.g. miniaturised chemical sensing such as HPLC detectors or bio-sensors with integrated photonics).
  • Demonstrate a growing publication record (including journals & conferences).
  • Experience participating in funded research projects such as FP7 or H2020 projects.
  • Experience participating in project reviews, including presenting results to funding agencies.
  • Industrial experience.

Appointment may be made on the Grade 6 Admin Admin III (B) €53,257 - €60,941 .  Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
