SAE- 12 Research Assistant in Biophotonics

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term (6 months)

Purpose of Role

Biophotonics@Tyndall is a newly established collaborative research programme based at the Tyndall National Institute led by Professor Stefan Andersson-Engels. The Group’s focus will be to form close collaborations with clinicians, research centres and companies to accelerate biophotonics technology and rapidly deliver breakthrough technologies into the hands of health-care providers. Using photonics as a driver for the faster development and deployment of more accurate, less invasive diagnostic and treatment methods for cancer and other diseases.  The new programme has been formed by the Tyndall National Institute, the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) and University College Cork, under a €5M award from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). 

The projects are divided into application- and fundamental-research driven tasks, and are briefly described at www.ipic.ie/team/stefan-andersson-engels/. One temporary 6 month research assistant position is now announced under the program.

The candidate is expected to be creative, self-motivated, and should help create an efficiently and friendly atmosphere within the Biophotonics team and beyond to all teams at IPIC and Tyndall. The position will offer great opportunities for being introduced to the field of biophotonics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of the Biophotonics team leaders and postdocs.
  • Contribute to the clinical testing of the research projects.
  • Contribute to and support general lab experiments.
  • Carryout various lab duties as required by lab managers.
  • Contribute to the report writing for project updates.
  • Contribute to the publication of the project outcomes.
  • To carry out administrative work to support the programme of research.
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with Tyndall Quality management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required health and safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required with the general scope and level of the position.
  • Perform other related duties as directed and as necessary for the work of the Biophotonics team.

Key Requirements

  • The successful candidate must have an MSc. in one of the following disciplines: physics, biomedical engineering, biomedicine, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • The candidate must demonstrate a high motivation; have an academic record of excellence, and good writing and communication skills.
  • Strong theoretical and experimental skills and documented ability in handling optical systems and/or biomedical samples are essential.
  • Experiences of relevance for the fields of biomedical optics, biomedical diagnostics, imaging, spectroscopy, the ultrasound-optical interaction for waveguide engineering project and/or within system integration are desired.
  • Highly self-motivated and able to demonstrate initiative.
  • A capability of working within a project team to achieve results.
  • A commitment to personal development.

This position may be appointed on the IUA Scales for Research Assistants €22,109-€34,612. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
