PhD Position – Optical Spectroscopy
PhD Position - Optical Spectroscopy
Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term
The Raman Team at Biophotonics@Tyndall is seeking highly motivated, inquisitive, and determined candidates to pursue a PhD in Optical Spectroscopy, focusing on diffuse optics, wavefront shaping, and Raman spectroscopy. This project aims to develop an advanced optical system capable of extracting quantitative information from bone through scattering media, providing insights into bone degeneration and regeneration. The PhD research will involve investigating wavefront shaping/structured beams in multiple scattering media to develop novel methods for focusing light through tissue, thereby enhancing Raman signals from depth.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, optimize, and standardize wavefront shaping setup for deeper penetration.
- Design compact devices and optical probes for in-vivo measurements.
- Champion and create novel algorithms and simulations to optimize wavefronts for in-vivo sensing and to understand photon migration in turbid media.
- Engage in scientific communication, including writing and presentations.
- Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
- Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
- Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
- Carry out any additional duties as may be reasonably required within the general scope and level of the post.
Essential Criteria
- Strong background in optics, wave transport, or related areas.
- Experience in optical system design and alignment.
- High level proficiency in programming for simulations
Desirable Criteria
- Familiarity with Monte Carlo simulations and machine learning techniques.
- Ability to engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the research group.
The PhD candidate will be part of an exciting and stimulating environment at the IPIC, one of the world’s leading photonics centers at Tyndall National Institute in Ireland. This position offers numerous opportunities for PhD training in close collaboration with international (Italy, UK) academics and clinicians.
The annual stipend is €25,000 pa. In addition, yearly University academic fees will be paid by the Tyndall National Institute.
Informal inquiries can be made in confidence to Rekha Gautam
The closing date for applications is 16th May, 2025.
