Post-Doctoral Researcher – Artificial Intelligence in Wireless Communicatications

LH-04 Post-Doctoral Researcher – Artificial Intelligence in Wireless Communications / UAV networks (Dublin)

Contract Type: Full Time/Fixed Term (18 months)

The Wireless Communications Laboratory at Tyndall National Institute in Dublin is advertising for the position of a Post-Doctoral Researcher in AI techniques for wireless communications/UAV networks within the SFI Defence Challenge MISTRAL and DTIF GUARD projects, and reporting to Dr Lester Ho. The successful candidate will develop AI-driven planning and control systems for autonomous UAVs, and optimisation of UAV communications links. The UAVs are deployed to provide wireless communications coverage and sensing capabilities for a wide array of applications including peacekeeping, search and rescue, disaster management and drug interdiction.

The post offers a superb opportunity for an ambitious individual to work collaboratively on exciting, cutting-edge science at the interface between academia, industry and across multiple teams.

Tyndall’s Wireless Communications Laboratory intends to grow to 50+ researchers based in Dublin by 2025. As part of this it is expected that follow-up opportunities within the lab will be available after the successful completion of the MISTRAL and GUARD projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create UAV flight optimisation algorithms to create and maintain an airborne network to provide wireless communications coverage to critical end-users on the ground.
  • Develop and validate AI-based predictors to provide accurate estimates of radio propagation conditions based on real-time measurements and terrain data.
  • Develop optimization techniques for cellular multi-connectivity and mmWave links to provide high capacity, reliable backhaul to UAVs.
  • Support the implementation and testing of the developed algorithms in real-world drone flight control systems.
  • Disseminate research achievements through publications in leading journals and at leading conferences.
  • Participate in developing future research initiatives within the group
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may be reasonably required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Wireless Communications, Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Good knowledge of machine learning and optimisation techniques.
  • Proficient in mathematical modelling tools such as Python/MATLAB/Julia.
  • Good publication record in IEEE or ACM journals and conference publications.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in the field of wireless communications and UAVs are highly desired.
  • Demonstration of experience with developing and implementing ML techniques in real-world systems, particularly for prediction and real-time optimisation of autonomous systems.
  • Ability to engage in the wider research activities of the research group.
