Biography

My research focuses on fabrication and characterisation of novel nanostructures towards their applications to nano-analytical science, e.g., nanoelectrochemistry and nano-biophotonics.  Complementary research on low-cost nano-fabrication focus on assessment of performance and potential for scalability to high-volume production of nanostructures is also ongoing.

Nanoelectrochemistry:
• Research is focused on fabrication and characterisation of gold nanowires and their subsequent integration as functional electrochemical devices.  These devices are highly sensitive and are being employed to detect key target molecules in health, security and environmental sectors.  They are also being employed to explore the kinetics of electron transfer from molecules to electrodes.  
• A theoretical study is also underway to provide further understanding on the interaction mechanisms between target analytes and nanowire electrodes.

Nanophotonics:
• Research on gold plasmonic nanostructure arrays for disease detection is ongoing.  Immunoassays are being developed at these novel metallic nanostructures while the application of polarised emission for anti-counterfeiting applications is also being explored. Finite element modelling is undertaken in parallel to provide the fundamental scientific knowledge required to underpin these research activities. 
• Photonics crystals are being explored for integration of multichannel nanophotonic based biosensors for very early disease detection, e.g., pancreatic cancer biomarkers (<100 fM).  Nano-photonic sensors are based on photonic crystal devices fabricated in SiNx. 

Nanofabrication:
To underpin these two core research programmes, research on exploring nanofabrication approaches based on hierarchical self-assembly, replica moulding, nanoimprint lithography and phase-shift lithography is being undertaken to drive the transition from laboratory to higher volume production and facilitate potential spin-out opportunities.
