Earlier this week, Tyndall National Institute proudly welcomed the inauguration of the NanoIC Pilot Line. As a partner in Europe’s €2.5 billion Chips JU initiative, Tyndall brings expertise that will drive semiconductor innovation beyond the 2 nm technology node and strengthen Europe’s long‑term technological sovereignty.
NanoIC brings together Europe’s leading research and technology organisations including imec (coordinator), CEA‑Leti, Fraunhofer‑Gesellschaft, VTT, CSSNT, and Tyndall, to create the Europe’s most advanced open-access pilot line for next‑generation integrated circuits. The initiative is a flagship action under the European Chips Act, designed to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor supply chain and ensure global competitiveness.
Besides providing access to metrology, characterisation, and fabrication with advanced baselines, Tyndall supports NanoIC by enabling the integration of emerging materials such as Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) and oxide semiconductors into leading‑edge ICs for enhanced performance and energy efficiency.
These contributions are essential to NanoIC’s mission of bridging the gap between early‑stage research and industrial‑scale semiconductor manufacturing.
Professor William Scanlon, CEO, Tyndall, commented on the inauguration:
We are proud to be hosting partners of the NanoIC Pilot Line. Tyndall is uniquely positioned to offer our partners acceleratedlab-to-fab pathways for the integration of novel materials in more powerful and energy-efficientICs.We are excited to build on this momentum and further strengthen European semiconductor innovation.
A Major Milestone for Europe and Ireland
The NanoIC pilot line marks a major step forward for Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem, accelerating innovation across strategic sectors including AI, autonomous systems, quantum technologies, advanced communications, and next‑generation healthcare.
For Ireland, Tyndall’s leadership within NanoIC directly supports the ambitions of the Silicon Island national semiconductor strategy, strengthening the country’s position as a key contributor to Europe’s advanced microelectronics landscape. Through its expertise in materials integration, device innovation, and advanced metrology, Tyndall ensures that Irish research plays a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of European semiconductor technologies.
The inauguration of NanoIC represents a defining step for Europe’s Chips Act, and Tyndall is proud to help drive the breakthroughs that will power the technologies of tomorrow.
