Sumedha Chanda is a doctoral student in the Biophotonics Group at Tyndall National Institute, where her research focuses on the development of advanced optical techniques for gastrointestinal (GI) diagnostics. Her work covers three main topics: diagnosing and classifying diseases related to the GI tract (like IBD) using Raman spectroscopy, imaging metabolites with fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), and analyzing GI polyps with diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Together, these approaches aim to improve early and accurate detection of GI disease in a non-invasive setting.
She completed her undergraduate studies with a BTech in Electrical Engineering, followed by an MTech in Photonics Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK). Her interdisciplinary training, bridging electrical engineering and photonics, provides a strong foundation for her current work at the intersection of optics, spectroscopy, and biomedical diagnostics.
Her research interests lie in integrating and translating optical imaging and spectroscopic methods into clinically meaningful diagnostic tools, with a particular focus on non-invasive and minimally invasive approaches for GI cancer screening and disease stratification.
