Tyndall’s Elisabeth Wintersteller will give a presentation on “Delivering industry-ready skills for advanced PIC manufacturing” at SPIE Optics + Photonics in San Diego on August 24th
Abstract:
Skills shortages present a major barrier to innovation in photonics, particularly in the rapidly evolving field of Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs). To address this challenge, PIXEurope is developing a modular, industry-aligned training programme embedded within Europe’s first fully integrated, open-access PIC pilot line. Targeting SMEs, start-ups, and industrial users, the programme delivers training across PIC design, fabrication, packaging, testing, reliability, and equipment operation, with a strong emphasis on pilot-line-specific technologies. Designed with low access barriers and expandable structure, it complements existing initiatives by focusing on skills unique to pilot line environments. Early outcomes demonstrate strong demand, including a flagship hands-on module in micro-transfer printing that has already trained 64 professionals. The programme will be fully operational by 2028, engaging up to 1,000 users annually.
