The EIC-funded NEUROPIC project aims to build novel programmable photonic chip architecture that could have important implications for various fields, including in data centres, autonomous vehicles and quantum information processing. Researchers will explore and pioneer methods of programming light signals on chips with a high level of flexibility. The team will integrate nanoelectromechanical technologies into the silicon photonics platform that are characterised by ultralow power consumption, small footprint and potentially faster operation compared to existing approaches. The ultimate goal is to build a network of independent and fully controllable nodes for neuromorphic computing.
