ICT for Health Strategic Programmes

Tyndall is performing breakthrough research in photonics, electronics, micro-nano-technology and smart systems to deliver innovative solutions to healthcare. Tyndall’s ICT for Health strategic programme is driving an ABC ecosystem (i.e. combining Academic, Business and Clinical stakeholders), working with academic partners, global leaders in medtech and pharma industries, and in collaboration with clinical experts, to ensure that Tyndall research delivers impact in terms of clinical utility and commercial opportunity. Leveraging from a range of proprietary technology platforms and world class capabilities, Tyndall is delivering novel solutions for diagnostics, connected health, smart drug delivery systems, cardio and neural recording and modulation, and minimally invasive surgery.

Tyndall’s ICT for Health programme is already working with several of the global leaders in medtech and pharma, and represents approximately 20% of the research activity of the institute, reflecting the growing opportunity to enable personalized, precision medicine through new generations of Smart Medical Devices. As well as being an international leader and the national centre for ICT hardware research and development in Ireland, Tyndall’s ICT for Health research ecosystem includes a number of national research centres, each with a major focus on development of enabling technologies for smart medtech, where Tyndall is host to both the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) and the Microelectronics Circuits Centre Ireland (MCCI), and is a collaborator in the CONNECT Centre for Future Networks & Communications (Internet of Things) and the Insight Centre for Big Data Analytics. Tyndall hosts researchers in residence from the medtech companies, such as Boston Scientific and Lake Region Medical, and has collaborations with over 70 clinical experts. Tyndall has led several multidisciplinary national and international research projects which leverage ICT solutions for challenges in healthcare, and has a strong track record of multidisciplinary research which is ongoing within national, EC and industry projects.
