RTÉ News Highlights Tyndall’s AI Research to Tackle Invasive Species

Following on from the successful launch of the HALY.ID project in 2023, RTÉ News yesterday featured Tyndall National Institute’s pioneering work on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drone technology to tackle invasive species. The coverage spotlighted how researchers are harnessing innovation to protect crops, reduce pesticide use, and support biodiversity.

The HALY.ID project, led by Tyndall in partnership with Teagasc, is a collaborative European initiative focused on monitoring and sustainably managing Halyomorpha halys (HH), commonly known as the brown marmorated stink bug.

By combining AI-powered monitoring systems with drones, the project is automating what was once a manual process, giving farmers and authorities new tools to respond quickly and effectively.

RTÉ highlighted the work of Amin Kargar, researcher at Tyndall, who is working on efforts to integrate AI into insect monitoring systems.

Mr Kargar commented:

By knowing exactly when and where insects appear, authorities can select the best possible strategy to control invasive insects in orchards and on land. Growers and farmers can then minimise unnecessary pesticide usage, which helps them to reduce pollution, protect native and helpful insects, and support biodiversity.
