Tyndall National Institute is proud to announce that Professor Stefan Andersson Engels, alongside Peter Andersen from Technical University of Denmark (DTU), has been awarded the 2025 Esther Hoffman Beller Medal by Optica. This prestigious recognition honours their vision and innovation in co-founding the International Graduate Biophotonics Summer School, which has become a cornerstone of biophotonics PhD education.
Stefan joined Tyndall in 2016 as Head of Biophotonics@Tyndall. His research focuses on harnessing photonics to tackle critical healthcare challenges, including surgical guidance, tumour detection, and the monitoring of preterm infants. In 2003, Stefan co-founded the International Summer School of Biophotonics with Peter Andersen. Today, the school is a vital educational platform in the field, with over 600 alumni worldwide.
The Esther Hoffman Beller Medal, established in 1993, recognises outstanding contributions to optical science and engineering education. The award honours exceptional teaching or innovative work that advances the understanding of optics. It is presented in memory of the late Esther Hoffman Beller.
We are incredibly proud of Stefan’s achievement and his leadership in the field of biophotonics.
