Tyndall National Institute played a key role in the recently concluded ASCENT+ programme, a European initiative aimed at accelerating innovation in micro- and nano-electronics by providing access to leading research infrastructure across Europe.
Funded by the European Union under Horizon 2020, ASCENT+ expanded access to world-class research infrastructure and strengthened collaboration across Europe by connecting leading institutions including: Tyndall National Institute (Ireland), CEA-Leti (France), Fraunhofer Mikroelektronik (Germany), INL (Portugal/Spain), and imec (Belgium).
Over four and a half years, the programme built a dynamic research platform, engaging a community of more than 3,000 members. Through its Transnational Access (TA) programme, ASCENT+ offered more than 70 research opportunities, supported by around 140 advanced tools, at no cost to researchers. More than 550 researchers participated, including 65 PhD and 32 Master’s students. Notably, 20% of the access projects supported industry partners, with a strong focus on SMEs.
ASCENT+ also launched the Research Accelerator Programme, which enabled selected participants to visit research facilities, receive training, and enhance their technical skills. This initiative strengthened collaboration and provided valuable insights into European research infrastructure.
The project resulted in 60 scientific publications, including 14 directly linked to TA projects and 40 from Joint Research Activities (JRAs). These JRAs contributed to technological advancements, improved TA services, and facilitated knowledge exchange between researchers and infrastructure providers. Several proof-of-concept technologies developed under ASCENT+ are now progressing towards higher technology readiness levels.
More than 100 professionals were involved in implementing the project, fostering collaboration across academia, research institutes, and industry. Notably, 62% of completed TA projects led to further joint efforts, highlighting ASCENT+’s success in building lasting partnerships.
As ASCENT+ closes, its impact continues, supporting Europe’s strategic goals for semiconductor research and innovation through the European Chips Act. This achievement was a key highlight in our 2024 Annual Report. View the full report here.
