Tyndall Strengthens Europe’s Semiconductor Future through ICOS Partnership

Tyndall National Institute is proud to be a key partner in the International Cooperation on Semiconductors (ICOS), a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening Europe’s semiconductor and semiconductor-based photonics industry. As global competition intensifies, ICOS is working to enhance Europe’s position by fostering international collaborations and shaping policies that drive innovation and supply-chain resilience in this critical sector.

The ICOS project is dedicated to delivering a comprehensive analysis of the semiconductor industry, identifying key challenges, and proposing strategic solutions. By assisting and counselling EU policymakers, ICOS ensures that recommendations for international cooperation are integrated into Horizon Europe calls, incentivising the research and innovation community to address the most pressing issues affecting the industry.

A key output of ICOS is the White Paper titled Generic Challenges and International Cooperation in the Semiconductor Field, in which Tyndall’s Giorgos Fagas made a significant contribution. The insights and recommendations from this paper serve as a foundation for shaping EU policy on the future direction of semiconductor research and development between Europe and other leading semiconductor countries.

Giorgos Fagas, Head of CMOS++ and EU Programmes at Tyndall said,

We are delighted to partner with Europe’s leading research and technology organisations, universities and industry actors in the ICOS project and to be leading the Horizon Scanning and Technology Foresight activities. Besides gathering economic and technology intelligence, ICOS has enabled engagement with international partners in the far East and set the foundations for fruitful partnerships.

Tyndall continues to play a crucial role in advancing these objectives, leveraging its expertise to support policy development and strategic decision-making in the European semiconductor landscape. By participating in ICOS, Tyndall reaffirms its commitment to research innovation and strengthening Europe’s autonomy in semiconductors and photonics.
