Photonics

Prof Frank H. Peters is a professor in the physics department at University College Cork, and the head of the Integrated Photonics group at the Tyndall National Institute. He completed his Ph.D. in 1991 from McMaster University, Canada. After completing a two-year Research Engineer position in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara he worked as a Research Scientist at Optical Concepts, W. L. Gore and Associates and Agilent Technologies developing and integrating photonic devices into datacom and telecom applications. From 2001-2005 Frank worked at Infinera in Sunnyvale California in the development of high speed photonic integrated circuits, and then moved to Ireland in 2005. Prof. Peters led the Photonics Strand in the Centre for Telecommunications Value Chain Research (CTVR), a large research centre funded by SFI, the IDA and Bell Labs from 2005-2016. Prof. Peters formed and directed PiFAS – Photonic Integration from Atoms to Systems, an SFI funded Strategic Research Cluster from 2007-2012, and this was expanded to the large Irish Photonic Integration Centre (I-PIC), of which he remains a part. He is currently a Science Foundation Ireland principal investigator, has authored more than 300 papers and holds over 50 patents all concerned with thermal, optical, electrical and systems issues relating to the design and use of photonic devices and high speed photonic integrated circuits.
