Project Info
High-temperature industries in Europe waste over 50 % of their energy as heat, amounting to 200 TWh yearly. Although there are ways to convert this waste heat into electricity, industries rarely use them due to issues with efficiency, cost, and integration. These challenges prevent widespread use of heat recovery technologies. Better solutions are urgently needed to save energy and cut greenhouse gas emissions. To find a solution, the EU-funded INFERNO project will create a hybrid system using thermophotovoltaics (TPV), metasurface collectors (MetaS), and thermoelectric generators (TEG). This system will boost heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency and can be easily added to existing production lines. Tested in three countries, it will help save energy and reduce emissions.
