Tyndall National Institute is proud to announce that Prof Sanathana Konugolu Venkata Sekar has been named on the Photonics 100 2026 list by Electro Optics, recognising him as one of the industry’s most innovative people and a global leader shaping the future of photonics.
The Photonics 100 is published annually by Electro Optics and highlights the top 100 individuals driving transformative change across healthcare, communications, quantum technologies, and integrated photonics. Prof Konugolu Venkata Sekar’s inclusion reflects his pioneering contributions to inclusive, scalable, and clinically impactful biophotonics.
He is Head of FAST Biophotonics at Tyndall, Associate Professor at the School of Physics, University College Cork (UCC), and CEO of BioPixS, a Tyndall spin-out focused on standardisation in biophotonics. His research and innovations span wearable diagnostics, inclusive sensing algorithms, and clinical validation tools.
In 2024, Prof Konugolu Venkata Sekar was awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Grant for his project NOBIAS, which addresses racial bias in optical health monitoring. His patented TD-DOS technology enables accurate physiological sensing across all skin tones, setting new standards for inclusive innovation.
Through BioPixS, his team develops and distributes optical tissue phantoms used globally to benchmark medical devices. He is also advancing chip-scale integration of biophotonics systems, unlocking new capabilities for portable diagnostics and personalised healthcare.
Prof Konugolu Venkata Sekar commented:
This is a pivotal moment to build photonic technologies that are not only advanced, but also impactful and globally accessible.
Tyndall congratulates Prof Konugolu Venkata Sekar on this outstanding recognition and celebrates his continued leadership in shaping the future of photonics.
