Single Element Planar High-Gain Antenna with Beam Steering capabilities - SEPARATE

In 2015 the WSN group in Tyndall received a SFI/EI Technology Innovation Development Award (TIDA) to investigate the design and development of a single element antenna with dynamic beam steering capabilities for applications in the Internet of Things (IoT), remote sensing and radio-metering, tracking, bio-medical imaging and sensing. The antenna is based on a planar, integrated waveguide antenna topology as shown. This project is developing design methods to increase the bandwidth and gain performance of these types of antennas that are typically limited by the electrical and physical properties of the substrate. A 10 GHz (X-Band) version of the antenna is currently under development.

This low-cost single element, high gain antenna with beam steering capabilities entails the simulation, design, implementation and test of system prototypes whose characterisation will inform commercialisation activities in a number of market verticals including:

  • Short range sensing
  • Base stations
  • Automotive anti-collision systems
  • Security
  • Biomedical imaging
  • Internet of Things
