Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, has announced the largest ever capital plan for Ireland’s tertiary sector, a €4.55 billion investment under the Tertiary Sector Capital Investment Plan 2026–2030. The programme will expand capacity, modernise infrastructure, and strengthen Ireland’s position as a global leader in talent development, research, and innovation.
As part of the key measures to strengthen research and innovation capacity, the plan commits to “further support for Tyndall National Institute as a national focal point for excellence in deep‑tech research, development, and graduate training.” This positions Tyndall at the centre of Ireland’s strategy to build world‑class research capacity and drive innovation across the economy.
We were pleased to welcome Minister James Lawless to Tyndall earlier this year for the launch of our Annual Report. During his visit, he described Tyndall as:
A trip to Tyndall is like peeping behind the curtain to see the future. It’s bustling with bleeding‑edge research, and scientists lighting up and pushing out the boundaries of knowledge.”
Announcing the plan, Minister James Lawless noted:
This Plan is about building capacity for Ireland’s future — in our people, our institutions and our economy. It provides the infrastructure required for world-class research, responsive skills provision, and inclusive access to lifelong learning. I look forward to working with all partners across the tertiary sector as we implement this ambitious programme.
