Dr Denis Doyle is Chairperson of Tyndall National Institute and a Board Member of IDA Ireland. A former ADI Fellow, Vice President and General Manager at Analog Devices, he brings more than 40 years of leadership experience in the global semiconductor industry, spanning advanced manufacturing, technology development, infrastructure investment, organisational transformation and talent development.

Throughout his career, Denis has led organisations through periods of significant technological change, balancing the demands of today with the opportunities of tomorrow. His experience in technology development, building advanced innovative manufacturing capabilities, developing future talent and positioning organisations for long-term success provides a valuable perspective as Tyndall advances its 2030 vision.

In this Q&A, Denis reflects on the thinking behind Tyndall 2030, the importance of long-term planning in a rapidly evolving semiconductor industry, and the opportunities for Tyndall as a national platform for attracting global talent, enabling innovation at scale, and supporting the next wave of Ireland’s semiconductor breakthroughs.

How did your industry experience help shape Tyndall 2030?

Having spent more than 40 years in the semiconductor industry, at the core of my experience has been the ability to balance immediate priorities with long-term ambition. Whether it was developing advanced manufacturing processes for technologies that would underpin products for decades to come, securing investment and building new manufacturing infrastructure from the ground up, managing production across multiple fabs and product lines, or balancing today’s skills needs with the development of the next generation of leaders, the fundamental requirement was always the same: delivering results for the day-to-day operational needs, while positioning the organisation to capitalise on opportunities five, ten or even twenty years into the future. That demanded anticipating future capacity, technology and skills requirements well in advance.

The same principle applied to people. Meeting today’s skills needs is essential, but so is developing the next generation of technical talent and leadership while proactively addressing future skills gaps that could constrain growth and innovation. At every stage, stakeholder engagement was equally important, whether with boards, investors, employees,  customers, suppliers or public agencies. Bringing people with you on the journey, and building confidence in a shared long-term vision, was often just as important as the technology itself.

The essence of the perspective I bring to the strategy is the importance of balancing the operational demands of today with a long-term vision for the future, while ensuring the Institute remains relevant, ambitious and positioned to capitalise on emerging opportunities as the semiconductor landscape evolves. If I were to summarise it in a few words, it would be: Be ambitious. Be prepared. Always keep your eye on the prize. In my experience, there is a paradox at work: the more you plan for the future, the more opportunities come your way.

What opportunities do you see for Tyndall to lead globally over the next decade?

The next decade presents a unique opportunity for Tyndall to lead as a globally recognised R&D and innovation hub for semiconductor technologies.

Through Tyndall 2030, we have a clear pathway to achieving this by becoming an international leader in semiconductor and related research, translating research and innovation into value-adding technologies and employment-creating enterprises, and acting as a catalyst for collaboration across the semiconductor ecosystem. This includes opportunities in strategically important areas such as advanced packaging, with Tyndall leading packaging technology development while contributing to prototyping, technology transfer and talent development.

I believe one of Tyndall’s greatest opportunities is to serve as the nucleus of Ireland’s semiconductor ecosystem, bringing together industry, researchers, entrepreneurs, policymakers and investors around shared goals. Equally important will be attracting and developing the world-class talent required to sustain long-term leadership in this rapidly evolving sector.
