Student Excellence Week Welcomes Europe’s Future Semiconductor Leaders to Tyndall

Tyndall National Institute recently welcomed 25 Master’s and PhD students from across Europe for the inaugural Student Excellence Week 2026, the first programme of its kind, delivered by Tyndall with support of the NanoIC Pilot Line. Developed in collaboration with imec, the Pilot Line’s coordinating organisation, the initiative brought together emerging researchers for technical presentations, laboratory tours, career development sessions, student presentations, networking opportunities and innovation workshops.

Held from 5th-8th October 2026 at Tyndall, the programme offered students direct access to researchers, cutting-edge facilities and insights into the technologies driving the future of semiconductor manufacturing and research. Throughout the week, participants explored topics including advanced memory devices, semiconductor materials, atomic-level processing, two-dimensional materials, electrical characterisation and machine learning. They also participated in career-focused discussions and workshops exploring how research can be translated into commercial impact.

A particular highlight was the opportunity to connect with fellow students, researchers and industry experts from across the semiconductor ecosystem, helping to build valuable professional networks and foster future collaboration.

Student Excellence Week was a fantastic opportunity to bring together talented students from across Europe and immerse them in the exciting world of semiconductor research and innovation,” said Dr Michael Nolan, Head of the Materials Modelling for Devices Group at Tyndall and Programme Coordinator. “The curiosity and engagement shown by the participants was exceptional. As Europe continues to invest in semiconductor technologies, initiatives like this are vital for developing the future researchers and innovators who will shape the sector.”

Supported by the NanoIC Pilot Line, the programme reflects a shared commitment to strengthening skills development and research capacity across Europe, while supporting Tyndall 2030‘s ambition to attract, develop and empower the talent needed to drive future advances in semiconductor research and innovation.
