DP-17 PhD Researcher: Tunable 3D RF& mmWave RF systems

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The Advanced RF Technology Group at Tyndall National Institute and University College Cork is looking to hire a well-qualified and highly motivated Electronic Engineering graduate with a strong interest in emerging RF front-end Technologies and Antenna Subsystems to pursue a PhD Degree at University College Cork. The successful candidate will work on interdisciplinary and ambitious research project that aims to develop low-cost fully adaptive 3D waveguide RF and millimeter-wave (mmWave) RF systems using novel RF tuning techniques based on actuated materials. The project will explore novel tuning concepts for 3D RF components (filters, beamformers, phase shifters) and antennas, RF/EM design methods, RF tuning concepts, actuation methods and integration schemes targeting efficient reconfigurability at frequencies as high as the mmWaves as key enabling elements of the Internet-of-Space (IoS). The prospective candidate will work on a sponsored research project at Tyndall National Institute whose deliverables will lead to a PhD degree from the University College Cork, Cork, Ireland.

The successful candidate will become a member of a diverse and vibrant community of students, research professionals and academics at TNI and UCC and will have access to world-class RF characterization, MEMS characterization, antenna measurement and manufacturing facilities at TNI and UCC. Further information on our community and infrastructure can be found in the

Key responsibilities

The post holder will be a member of a research team comprising MS and PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and research professionals. The successful candidate is expected to carry out independent and innovative research that will lead to high-impact publications (e.g IEEE journals and conferences) as needed for a PhD degree while delivering on a research project that sponsors the role. The position will involve RF design, testing and integration of actuated materials, mechanical tuners within 3D waveguides alongside design and testing of electromagnetic components. Weekly and monthly progress reports, literature reviews and participation in conferences are to be expected. Thus, the candidate would need to be eligible to travel internationally. Participation in academic curriculum development and instruction, lab organization and education and public engagement activities is also to be expected.

Essential Criteria

  • First honors MS degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related relevant discipline.
  • The candidate must have taken classes in Electronic circuits, Electromagnetics, Microwave engineering, RF circuits, antennas and have achieved high grades.
  • Experience with RF/Electromagnetic CAD design tools, e.g ADS Keysight, CADENCE and ANSYS HFSS, CST or equivalent.
  • The candidate must have high analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • The candidate must demonstrate proficiency in English alongside with good scientific writing and communication skills.

Desired Criteria

  • Thesis or independent research study in areas relevant to the position
