Professor William Scanlon was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer for Tyndall National Institute in September 2018. William has over 20 years of experience of leading and managing research and innovation in an academic context and 10 years of industry experience. He is a recognised pioneer in wearables and medical device communications research, a technology entrepreneur and an accomplished academic in the area of wireless innovation and communications.
William was Chair of Wireless Communications (full professor) at Queen’s University Belfast since 1998 and was Head of School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Queen’s immediately prior to joining Tyndall. He has also held a part-time Chair in Short Range Radio at the University of Twente, The Netherlands.
He has also held a number of commercial roles, including co-founder and Managing Director of a spin-out company that focused on real time location systems, as well as engineering roles with Siemens, Nortel Networks and Osram.
