IPIC at Tyndall hosts PIADS CDT Winter School 2024

Recently, the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC), SFI Research Centre for Photonics at Tyndall was delighted to host the Winter School for PIADS CDT students, for the second time.

The annual Winter School is a collaboration between the Irish Photonic Integration Centre, Queen’s University Belfast and University of Glasgow, and is dedicated to the professional development of PIADS CDT students.

PIADS CDT is a doctoral training programme and aims to train a new generation of researchers who are equipped to carry out world-leading R&D in photonics.

Winter School 2024 welcomed 53 students from the above institutions and were provided with exclusive tours, visiting worldclass lab facilities such as the Photonics Packaging lab, Quantum lab, Optical communications, and flexi fab as well as the Photonics Escape room.

Elisabeth Wintersteller, Training Programme Manager, Irish Photonic Integration Centre commented on the success of this year’s winter school.

‘We had a fantastic atmosphere at our PIADS winter school and it was a great pleasure hosting the CDT PIADS students in Cork. Bringing the students from the CDT partners together is a vital aspect of their professional development. Witnessing how they grow as a group and as individuals respectively is very fulfilling, and I believe that this network will remain an integral part throughout their careers yet to come. I want to thank everyone who helped making this training event a success – the students, speakers and our funder, SFI.”

Lisa Campbell, External Engagement Manager, CDT Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage (PIADS) said

“Tyndall National Institute was the perfect location for our annual PIADS CDT Winter School.  Our doctoral students enjoyed a packed programme focusing on a proactive approach to career and professional development, whilst being inspired whilst being exposed to cutting-edge research in electronics and photonics with exclusive lab tours.

A huge thank you to Tyndall National Institute, the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) and SFI Research Centre for Photonics for hosting such a wonderful event.”
