Success for Tyndall at the Annual AI Ireland Awards

Tyndall has won the ‘Best Application of AI in an Academic Research Body’ at the Annual AI Ireland Awards.

The winning project is developing a miniaturised wearable device with advanced machine learning algorithms for precise Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis and blood pressure estimation with the goal of improving assessment and treatment.

This project, led by Dr Salvatore Tedesco, addresses societal challenges for people with Parkinson’s. The team has created a prototype, a “wearable technology” which is a potentially life-changing device for people who have Parkinson’s disease.

The device could be worn as a wristband or a watch and its purpose is to monitor the frequency and severity of a Parkinson patient’s motor symptoms as well as changes in blood pressure. The device can monitor and track critical patient data.  It is powered by artificial intelligence, and if any irregularities are detected, an alert can be sent to a consultant, who can intervene and provide assistance if needed.

Speaking about the award, Dr Salvatore Tedesco, Team Lead for Wearable AI for Health & Well-being at Tyndall, said:

"This is a great achievement for the team and all at Tyndall. I am proud to see our AI strategy bearing fruit, being recognised nationally, and having an impact in Ireland.  I would like to express my thanks to all those who were involved in the project at Tyndall and the Parkinson’s Disease Research Cluster at UCC, the Cork Branch of Parkinson’s Association of Ireland, and the product design & innovation agency we worked with, Design Partners."
