FORTHCOMING SHORT COURSE

“Advanced Nanotechnology: Materials, Processes, Structures & Applications”

VisionOnline Advanced Training Week, The Tyndall National Institute

Cork, Ireland - 4th-8th April 2005

Following the success of VisionOnline training weeks at Cranfield, Budapest and Aachen, this intensive 4 day advanced course has been organised by Technology for Industry Ltd as part of the European Commission VisionOnline project.

Who Should Attend

This is an advanced course for participants from Academia, Industry and Research Institutes.  Attendees should have a science background as the course will include technical aspects of nanomaterials and processing technology.  In addition the course will appeal to those who are seeking to understand more about the applications and markets that can be addressed by nanotechnology as well as the business models that are being employed by companies active in this field.

Course Aims

The course has been developed to improve the participant’s understanding of commercial opportunities for nanotechnology.  By covering the whole supply chain from research on materials and production processes through to product applications, the participants will be able to appreciate where their own work and the role of their organisation fits into the technology transfer processes.  The objective of the course is to cover the whole breadth of the ‘nanospace’ incorporating both top-down as well as bottom-up approaches to creating nanostructured devices and materials.

Course Content

The lecturers have been selected from leading industrial and academic organisations to ensure a balanced mix of theory and practice.  The course will focus on nanotechnology which is relatively close to market rather than long term research.  The course will cover nanomaterials, production processes, metrology and characterisation and give practical applications showing how nanotechnology delivers competitive advantages.  Soft materials (polymers, biomaterials) will be covered as well as ceramics, semiconductors, advanced functional materials and metals.  Production processes will include: wet chemistry and solution based methods, self-assembled monolayers, nanostructured coatings, thin film production and novel techniques using super-critical fluids and aerosol sprays.

Applications in nearly every sector of commerce will be described.
